Citroen has freshened up the C4, and these are the first official images.

A raft of interior, exterior and mechanical updates have been made to the quirky French hatch – including the introduction of two new petrol engines co-developed with BMW.

The new 1.6-litre engines – a 118bhp VTi and a turbocharged 148bhp THP unit – combine fuel economy of 42.2mpg and 40.9mpg with emissions of 159g/km and 164g/km respectively. To drive down emissions across the range, HDi models will now be equipped with low rolling resistance Michelin tyres as standard.

On the outside, the front grill is given a gaping, open-mouthed look, while the bonnet is re-sculpted and the number plate re-positioned to bring ‘the C4 in line with the prestigious looks of the recently launched C5’, according to Citroen.

To further distinguish the three and five-door variants, the C4 Coupe’s taillights now have transparent lens covers, and a variety of new alloy designs, colours and trim options are available.

Inside, to counter the accusation that the C4’s cabin was ergonomically compromised as a result of its innovative layout, the wheel-mounted rev counter is now incorporated into the central speedometer unit for improved visibility.

Better quality fit and finish is also promised, with dashboard and door materials designed to emphasise the revised C4’s shift upmarket. Citroen’s latest NaviDrive sat-nav is available too, comprising a seven-inch colour screen and 30GB integrated hard drive for music.

The revised C4 is available now, priced from £12,695.
