Driver Power 2009

The numbers have been crunched, the data compiled and the results analysed – now it’s time to dish the dirt on the UK’s best - and worst! - cars.

Want to find out what the best car in Britain really is? Driver Power can reveal all. After processing more than 20,000 completed questionnaires, Auto Express’s annual motoring satisfaction report has now been released.

With a shock new winner and a big surprise in the top manufacturer ranking, the results are more fascinating than ever. The top five are revealed in this exclusive preview below – and it’s great news for Jaguar.

The firm’s British built XF has scooped the overall number one spot in its debut year, seeing off the challenge from Skoda’s top value Superb, and last year’s winner, the Octavia. In the end it was the Jaguar’s alluring combination of luxury, comfort and driving dynamics that secured the victory in the motoring community’s top driver satisfaction poll.

Two SUVs complete the top five, shattering the myth that drivers are getting tired of all of their 4x4s.

1. Jaguar XF

What a winner! As the reigning Auto Express car of the year, Jaguar’s XF executive saloon is a triumph. Drivers think so too, giving the sumptuous four-door higher scores than any other car in the UK.

2. Skoda Superb

It’s just been replaced, but that isn’t stopping Skoda’s original Superb from delivering a fantastic all-round package. Even though the big saloon is available for as little as £2,500 on the used market, owners who drive their Czech models every day are smitten.

3. Skoda Octavia

Having been overall Driver Power champion in both 2007 and 2008, Skoda’s Octavia has finally been beaten! Make no mistake, however, the Octavia is still a tremendous family car.

4. Land Rover Discovery   5. Lexus RX
4. Land Rover Discovery

Think big 4x4s are old news? Think again! Drivers have voted the huge seven-seat Discovery into fourth place overall in the Driver Power 2009 chart. No other model received higher ratings for practicality, while the Land Rover’s ride quality was also judged to be faultless.

5. Lexus RX

The second 4x4 to find itself in the top five, the Lexus RX is also the highest placed Japanese model. With a large proportion of examples featuring hybrid power, the premium SUV has received a top all-round average score.
