Nissan Qashqai

British-built Qashqai put the crossover class on the map, providing an upright, neatly styled alternative to family hatches and estates. Its huge success means there are plenty of used cars to choose from – and one to suit every budget.

Options include two or four-wheel-drive versions, and the extended Qashqai+2 (which arrived in late 2008) adds an extra pair of fold-out seats in the boot to create a seven-seater.

Last year’s facelift sharpened the looks. This is good news for buyers of pre-2010 models, as values have fallen, so earlier cars are cheaper than ever. The sought-after diesels command a premium: 1.5-litre dCi units offer the best economy – expect 54.3mpg from the standard car and even more if you can find a PureDrive variant. Good, nearly new versions are still within the dealer network, but older models with a few miles on the clock can now be found at independents and car supermarkets.

All Qashqais are well specced – even entry-level Visia versions come with standard-fit air-con and alloys. Acenta versions add climate control, auto wipers and headlamps, parking sensors and cruise control, while Tekna spec includes the likes of leather trim and a panoramic glass roof.

A comfortable ride and robust cabin mean the Nissan copes with the rigours of family life. It is reliable, too, as it came fifth in this year’s Driver Power: a seriously impressive result.

2002-2008

Early crossover is more car than 4x4, but it’s equally at home off the road as on it. A truly capable and tough choice that’s fun to drive and reliable. Previous generation is great value, although running costs are high and there’s no diesel.

2009 to date

The Yeti has been a massive success for Skoda, so values are holding fast and used cars are still hard to come by. It’s spacious, comfortable and good to drive – check out the dealer network for second-hand models as they are relatively few and far between.
