Audi A1 quattro revealed

Limited-run 252bhp Audi A1 quattro gets four-wheel drive and a £40,000 price-tag

Audi A1 quattro revealed front

By Luke Madden

21st December 2011

With concepts like the 501bhp Clubsport quattro, Audi has always hinted at producing a high-performance version of the A1. So we were patiently waiting for the S1 to arrive when the German firm revealed this, the Audi A1 quattro.

It's not the S1 we were expecting and nor is it the extreme RS1 but, instead, it seems to sit somewhere between the two. Power comes from the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine found in the S3, which produces 252bhp. Combined with four-wheel drive and a low kerbweight, the A1 quattro can sprint from 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds.

According to our German sources, the A1 quattro only comes in the Clubsport quattro-inspired trim you see here. That includes the stylish alloys, white metallic paint, black roof and large rear spoiler. There's no word on changes to the interior but expect high quality materials like carbon fibre, Alcantara and aluminium to feature.

For the time being the A1 quattro seems to be just a small limited-run model, produced in left-hand drive only to see if people will be willing to buy an RS1 model should it eventually go into full-scale production. An Audi insider told us a decision will be made in January as to whether right-hand-drive models will be built at all.

The latest reports suggest the A1 quattro will cost around £40,000 and will be available from the middle of 2012. The S1, with around 220bhp, will follow in the middle of 2013.

The more shit you try to put in the more pointless the outcome becomes. All this hardware is of the S3/RS3 or whatever. It is seen it has been done to death, haldex is available to every fucking euro maker/model and nobody gives a damn.

As if it is not enough the supermini platform wasn't fit for all this in the first place. This was designed for PQ24 type platforms. A1/polo chassis is shit for all this power ...golf/leon/a3 on the other hand...

Audi hasn't realized that to make a better car than your rival you have to make a BETTER car not a faster/torguier car.
That is why this car won't be compared to cheaper rivals and won't be as fun to drive as a clio RS.

Oh yeah and the interior looks like shit for such a limited car.

Waaaaay too expensive

I currently have a 360bhp Seat Ibiza that I use purely as a trackday car, but as its getting a bit old I've been looking for something to replace it for some time.

I've been following the S1RS1 with itnerest as it seemed to offer a small, lightweight car with lots of power plus with the benefit of 4wd, however I have to say that this car is a massive disappointment.

252bhp would be fine for an S1 but at an S1 type price (i.e. cheaper than an S3), but its not enough for an RS1 (Yes costs as much as a much more powerful RS3).

For £40k I think I'd get a TT-RS (For road/track) or a top spec Ariel Atom for track only.

RS3 beater

Add on £450 to get the 300bhp and easy RS3 beating performance.
As it is the RS3 has 203bhp/ton
252bhp A1 might have 212bhp/ton
(if it weighed same as 2.0TDI A1, but with 4wd guess it will be a touch heavier hence the slower 0-62mph time) but with a 300bhp remap it should put the power to weight ratio better than the RS3 and provide a faster performing car.

Expensive - I'd say!

Believe it or not I am actually a bit of a fan of the A1 ( I should be shot being a Mini driver! )

But for £40k, I could have my Cooper D for weekday yawn boring motorway journey to work and a JCW for the weekend country road fun ( and the track should I choose! ).

Mind you we could all buy british ( well as far as we can! ) for our 40k and get a Lotus Elise?

Keep British motor industry jobs safe!

4ring circus continues

£5 for a can of paint in homebase, bring it home slap it on a wall, watch it dry, much more interesting & exciting. there, just saved you £39,995. yawn yawn yawn yawn yawn yawn yawn yawn yawn yawn yawn. i just wonder who really will be the first moronic brainless cretin that buys the first one?

I've never been an Audi fan since they started copying and pasting the design from one car to another. Audi being Audi i'm sure this must be good around the corners with that 4WD so lets wait and see what the reviews say. seems more like an engineering project than a fun car. no doubt the price is on the heavy side for such a small car. if its the fun factor you want then better cars for far less.

HOW MUCH?!?!?

Albeit a bit of an admirer of the A1 on many levels, I cannot believe that they're pitching this 252hp effort at £40K!! I simply don't understand why Audi aren't calling this an S1 and pitching it at circa £30K. Come ON: that would STILL be £30K for a parts bin breathed on/re-engineered A1!! As for me; I'd seriously consider a 2.0Tdi 170hp quattro at £25K if they get around to it - but ONLY as long as it had/has a folding canvas roof a la Fiat 500 as an option!! Now that would be a proper covers-all-bases car!!

Ha!

£40000 for a supermini? Is it April 1st? That's the funniest thing I've read all year.....

By everton2004 on 22 December, 2011, 10:58am

Hahahahahahahaha

Forty big ones for a 4wd supermini? The BMW 1M Coupé has 340bhp for the same sort of money and Audi's own S3 retails for about eight grand less and offers the same power output in a more practical body - with the added advantage of availability in right-hand drive.
A production A1 quattro should be priced in the £25k region.
Publicity stunt or bad joke? Either way Audi's having a laugh.

ha and all will sell

lmfao...this ia so funny to me the comments i mean ..at the end of it, every one that audi makes will sell out ...ha ha thats the funnny part...inspite of the na -sayers who cant say anything good ...if they had the money you would be frist in line ...

By autounionDI on 22 December, 2011, 12:53pm

In response to the comment ".if they had the money you would be frist in line" by autounionDI...

I could afford it actually, but its not enough of a car for £40k.

I also could afford to pay £10 for a Mars bar, but no sensible person would.

Interestingly other car sites are indicating that this car will cost in the £25k-£30k region... that would seem more sensible to me.

Can't Wait.

I love hot hatches. (I hope it has a big wing..lol)

By badboyrocco on 22 December, 2011, 4:55pm

Yuch!

An ugly looking runt.
Even the Kia Rio looks better!
Looks as though Audi went to Halfords.

By toycollector on 22 December, 2011, 5:22pm

When you think of other cars at 40K the A1 doesn't make sense. If it is limited edition or whatever audi doesn't also car you can always find 300 impulsive buyers. Finally the chassis doesn't seem fit enough to handle all of that to me and I don't think 4WD is going to change that. Better off with a bigger car that doesn't sweat...

By giorikas81 on 23 December, 2011, 7:36am

Do you mind?

Autoexpress, is this really the forum to allow the foul mouthed rantings of a semi-literate slob like giorikas81. If I want to hear opinionated clap trap like this I'll go to the pub. I dont want to read it here!

By hampson10 on 23 December, 2011, 8:16am

£40k

Ok folks try this. For £37k you can get a second hand Aston Matrin V8 Vantage or a Nissan GTR. In fact for this kind of money you can get a lot of cars that I would rather have then buy a go kart for £40K with a premium badge and status

By f1moh on 23 December, 2011, 12:40pm

Do you mind 2?

Totally agree with @hampson10 - what an ignorant and totally unecessary rant!
