Here are the pictures that prove Ford’s Mondeo is going under the knife!
Following on from the facelifted S-MAX MPV (driven on Page 30), the blue oval is readying a revised version of its popular family car. And our team of eagle-eyed spies caught a prototype virtually undisguised during testing.
As with the S-MAX, the new Mondeo benefits from a subtle rework on the outside. That means modified front and rear bumpers, plus LED daytime running lights for top-spec Titanium and Titanium X models. The most significant changes come under the bonnet, with the introduction of the firm’s EcoBoost direct-injection turbo petrol engines. There will be a choice of 160bhp 1.6-litre or 200bhp 2.0 versions – both 20 per cent more efficient than the units they replace.
Ford’s double-clutch Powershift gearbox will be an option for the first time, while the diesel line-up will also be updated with the arrival of a new 160bhp 2.0-litre TDCi unit. Hatch, saloon and estate variants will all benefit from the changes.
The new Mondeo is expected to make its debut at October’s Paris Motor Show, before being launched towards the end of the year. Prices are set to start from around £16,000.

It not a redesign it more a like a facelife. But the front a has a bit. But I don't see any problem with it.
Great, another car with christmas tree lights adorning the front end, and by the sounds of it, they'll be on ALL the time like those on the A4...
Some may know that in the USA, the Mondeo is sold as a Taurus, and shares the Mondeo's platfrom, but has a different bodyshell. It looks more and more like the Taurus everytime they facelift it. I think it looks better, if only a bit. Just to touch on the LED lights. In a few years, you will see them on every car, as they will be standard.
@ Matt2093.
This is the only facelift the Mk4 has had. As the smallest engine available in the Taurus is 3.5L, I don't think they are even remotely the same cars albeit different body. Also when the Mk5 appears in around 2012 it will share it's platform with the American Fusion.
Taurus and Mondeo are not common cars. Will be from about 2015. LED lights are mandatory from all cars built from 01/01/2011 so they will be on everything soon
Another facelift job but it does look good .
As a long time car fan, these latest offerings almost make me weep. I am sure that the new Mondeo will handle well, provide excellent accomodation for four or five people and swallow huge amounts of luggage, but the car is such a barge! When one thinks that the Mondeo is the 'Cortina' in Ford's range, I think my point is made. Even a Mk2 Granada was neater than the offering shown above and that was in a class above, I think that with our ever more crowded roads and restricted parking spaces it is about time that manufactures started to downsize their offerings.
Haven't bought a Ford in Thirty years.
Impressed by the new Fiesta and Ka.The face lifted Mondeo lacks style. the rear end still looks a mess.Wouldnt even noticed it had been re-styled if you hadn't have said so.Vauxhalls Ingsignia is more stylish. The light strip on the bumpers looks like an after thought.Reminds me of Ford in the 80's, dull cars with dull styling.
@Niadra.
If you want a smaller Ford buy a Focus, it's roughly the same size as a Mk2 Mondeo. Manufacturers do make smaller cars.
I loved them starting with a 2.0 l modest 2 door Consul in mertallic green then going on to 2.0. 4 door Granada then later the real ones, 2.8l Granada Ghia Estates with everything including electric sliding roof and AIR! Nothing like them since - at least in Europe?
These cars had a great ride very comparably with a Jaguar XJ and really well eqipped comfortable interiors. Those were the days - will Ford really make anything comparable now? The new COE in the USA has jerked / pushed Ford onto the right course - will the new boys at GM also succeed?
Drastic pruning at GM OPEL? It has been years overdue at OPEL where they have been vastly overmanned for 20 years or so and living on their old reputation with the original Kadetts, Rekords and Kapitäns,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,!
Happy Motoring!
It's not a complete overhaul, but definitely a facelift.
I love seeing LED daytime-running lights, even though the S-MAX uses them too.
I also think wing-mirror indicators are well suited to it as well.
I would love to see in the flesh soon.
I get where you're coming from...
The MK1 Ford Focus was a neat, well packaged and fantastic handling little car that'd get you to the shops and back sporting a mighty big grin.
Who the hell wants a Focus that's so big, if you parked it at the centre of Wales, you'd need to swim across the Bristol Channel just to open the bonnet?
I don't need a Focus with a boot that can accommodate a flock of fat suitcases, and I don't have 53 friends. If I did, I'd buy a bus...
I saw a 2009 Focus RS parked nose to tail with a MK2 Mondeo outside my local Tescos yesterday, and I swear the Mondy was sheltering from the rain under the RS's spoiler. "Gee Mom, but those 'Foci' are huge!!!"
No major changes then. At least they haven't made it look like the new focus.
I'll reserve judgement for the X sport vesion.
This is not as attractive as the 'New Mondeo' model featured in an earlier Auto Express news story. I would wait until that model comes out. This model looks bland.
Another dull mid sized car from Ford. While I don't like the Fiesta or the Kuga much, at least they both look like Ford made a good effort when deciding on their looks. The Mondeo is clearly a very good car to drive - it's just a shame that it's not a nice car to look at.
