Audi's RS3 storms in

Sizzling hot hatch that’s as fast as an R8 but less than half the price is set to rip up the road

Audi's RS3 storms in

By Sam Hardy

19th November 2010

It's the ultimate hot hatchback! After years of snatched spy shots and hushed rumours, Audi has at last taken the covers off this – the RS3.

A final farewell to the A3, which will soon be replaced, and a rival to the upcoming BMW 1-Series M Coupé, this turbocharged, four-wheel-drive sports car is designed to mix the essence of the original Quattro with the practicality of a five-door Sportback body.

And it boasts some real punch. Behind the deep front air intakes lies a 2.5-litre five-cylinder petrol turbo engine, borrowed from the mighty TT RS. Producing 335bhp and 450Nm of torque from only 1,600rpm, it features quattro all-wheel drive and a seven-speed S tronic double-clutch ’box, complete with steering wheel paddles.

The RS3 uses a sophisticated launch-control system to race from 0-62mph in an incredible 4.6 seconds – making it just as fast as Audi’s V8-engined R8 supercar – and on to an electronically limited top speed of 155mph. The characterful engine – which harks back to the original 1984 Quattro coupé – should sound as good as it runs. As with the TT RS, the RS3 gets a Sport button; this not only sharpens throttle response further, but opens a flap in the exhaust to intensify the engine’s trademark offbeat note.

However, the RS3 is not just about straight-line speed. It has an extra-long seventh gear for relaxed motorway cruising, an oil pump that works only when required and brake energy recovery, allowing it to return 31mpg combined – impressive for such a powerful machine.

It should be very good at cornering, too. Audi’s expert ride and handling engineers have spent many months fine-tuning the super hatch at the challenging Nürburgring circuit in Germany. They have widened the tracks in order to increase stability, while the front MacPherson strut and multi-link rear suspension set-ups have been strengthened and given lowering springs to drop the ride height by 25mm.

Engineers have also added 19-inch alloy wheels with 235/35 tyres at the front and 225/35 rubber at the rear.

Using the same Haldex-equipped quattro drivetrain as the TT RS, the RS3 doesn’t get a rearward torque bias like the R8, unfortunately. Instead, power is split 50:50, although the system can
apportion muscle to the wheel with the most grip. Uprated brakes – 370mm discs at the front, 310mm at the rear with four-piston calipers – and a traction-control system that can be totally switched off, complete the dynamic package.

Visually, the RS3 certainly stands out – but it still has that classic muscular yet subtle look, with highlights including widened arches, deep air intakes in the modified front splitter and a rear roof spoiler. Inside, the RS3 gets sports seats in black leather, a flat-bottomed wheel and extra dials for turbo boost pressure, oil temperature and lap timer.

Standard equipment is generous: each car comes with a rear parking camera, climate control and xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, while options include bucket seats. The RS3 will be available for order from mid-December with a price tag of around £40,000.

Meanwhile, Audi has also confirmed that it will launch an RS4 version of the latest A4, which will be available only as an Avant estate.

Oh yes...

Now THAT'S what I call a hot hatchback! I'm also happy to see that it'll be cheaper than the RS500 version of the Ford Focus. I absolutely love this car.

Oh, and I'm also proud of Audi saying they're gonna bring back the RS4. Who cares if it's estate only? That's an advantage if you love the RS4, AND you have kids!

Brilliant

Simply brilliant.
Been waiting for Audi to do something like this in ages.
Only one thing gets me. Why does it have a sport button?
You buy this car for a reason!! It should be in sport mode all the time!! The car should have 6-speed gear box all the time, then at the push of a button, have a comfort mode where the 7th gear comes into its own.
Why don't they do that?
Silly.

Accuracy of article...

Great to see the release of this car - shame the article isn't particularly accurate.

According to Autoexpress: the RS3 doesn’t get a rearward torque bias like the R8, unfortunately. Instead, power is split 50:50,

Excerpt from Audis website: In addition, the quattro drivetrain has been upgraded for the RS 3 Sportback allowing, if necessary, 100% of the power to be guided to the front or rear wheels. This enables you to make the most of the car’s incredible torque by, for instance, pulling out of bends even sooner.

Come on Autoexpress, a little more attention to the accuracy of an article should be exercised please, if only to save face.

Regarding the car - shame a three door version wont be available - would put it more inline with its claimed competitors.

Shame its attached to an A3

Come on... The whole A3 range looks about ten years out of date and feels it now too!

Mate of mine has an S3... Really wouldn't want one!

Dull and soul-less... Figures might say its quick, but that means not one jot if its delivered without any real zest or zeal...

Am sure German car nuts will have some sort of pretend superiority over this car having good shut-lines... Hot hatches aren't about bloody shut-lines or ergo-touch trim, they should be accessible, fun and chuck-ably cheap! This isn't anything like what makes a hot-hatch good!!

Eye watering....

40 grand for an Audi that is essentially the size of a Golf/Focus etc??? I guess there must be plenty of people out there with more money than sense.......

£40k for a shopping trolly?

Are you kidding? £40k is serious performance car money and they haven't even put in a proper 4x4 system, they have the cheap-o Haldex-equipped quattro.

£40k gets you a mint 996 911 GT3, or a very good condition 997 911 Carrera S. Or a used BMW M3 v8. And if you really want a 4x4 I just did a search on autotrader and found a black edition 2009 Nissan GT-R with 29k on the clock and the balance of the warranty for £39k.

You'd have to be absolutely barmy to part with £40k on one of these.

4mm from your back bumper...

...driven by an cock on a mobile phone. And sure it'll have loads of power, but will be nose heavy and lack any finesse like all Audis.

By gherkins123 on 23 November, 2010, 7:50am

Looks good, but why no 3dr hot hatch??

And why just two smallish tail pipes on the left?? As a fully paid up 'cock on a moblie' I DEMAND a big tail-pipe on each side of my Audi RS car!! And why a year old TTRS is still top of my shopping list for this next year.

Nice........

I've been a fan of Audis for many years and although 40k sounds like a shitload of money for a hot hatch, look at the spec of this car. Today's market demands practicality as well as fun and the RS3 looks like it delivers both in spades. This is one car I would go out and buy if finances permitted (which they don't lol).

I agree though, Audi missed a glowing opportunity to send the A3 out in a blaze of glory by not also making it available in a 3 door. Is this really the end of the A3 as Auto Express will have us believe? What is the replacement going to be the Audi 3.5? Since they already have an A1, A2 (reborn I think), A4, A5, A6, A7, A8 they're breaking up what might arguably be considered to be an unusual or even unique line up figuratively speaking.

shut lines

I can't be bothered to write the whole name of the guy who was so unimpressed by "shut lines". But did I not pick up in his title the name LEGO? I enjoyed playing with that with my kids who are now 38 and 40. Bad shut lines contribute to wind noise and severe water ingress, but I don't suppose he would be interested in these factors as he is only interested in making toy motors.

IT'S A COUPE

What a stunner !!! As noted, its maybe a pity there is no 3-door, but what the hell. I dont know what a 'Sportback' is in Audi-speak, but Audi have sinned, along with some other grossly arrogant [German] car makers and butchered the English language, by calling 4 & 5 door cars coupes, so why not simply call it a coupe.
Some interesting non-vitriolic comments to read as well, which is alway refreshing........

By barina47 on 24 November, 2010, 2:36am

40k for....

A car that nobody will even give a second glance to. If you buy a performance car surely one should expect a tiny bit of bling? Instead we get the usual muted conservative Audi rubbish.

I am not suggesting it should look totally council estate like the Focus RS but come on Audi use your imagination! Maybe Audi should have a clear out of their performance styling team and get some young blood in there with some new ideas and inspiration.

If I could only afford it :)

The design is so... conventional. It's something I wouldn't look at twice. But it's a great car nevertheless. If I could only afford it.
