Audi’s MINI rival is currently available only as a three-door hatch, but this picture confirms that the German brand is working on a more spacious five-door model – and it will aim to tempt buyers away from the British brand’s Clubman.

Likely to be called the A1 Sportback, it shares the same wheelbase as the standard car, but will feature a slightly longer body and – as you can see from our spy shot – a higher roofline. Audi will use the extra length to move the rear seats back for greater legroom. Boot space is also set to increase over the three-door’s 267 litres.

The A1 Sportback is scheduled to launch next February, before Audi begins work on a cabriolet version and a hot S1 model. It’s expect to command a premium of around £500 over the standard A1 – that means prices should start from £14,000.

Big mistake

Why not just make the 5 door, taller version the A2. Hell if your changing the body style to make it taller and longer why make it look like the A1, give it its own distinct look. Has anyone thought 'Oh yeah I want a 5 door longer version, I'll go for an A3?'

RE: Big mistake

Yorkslad will find that the forthcoming A2 is a completely different sort of car. Don't forget that the A1 is a city car and the A3 a small hatchback - much like the difference between the Polo and the Golf from VW. Expect the A2 to be more like the Up!
