Audi’s hottest hatchback has been spied testing in Germany, with an RS3 Saloon expected to follow

Audi is hard at work on its most powerful A3 model. Revealed in these spy shots, the new Audi RS3 was spied testing on public roads in Germany and will feature an aggressive styling overhaul to mark it out from the rest of the model lineup.

Although heavily disguised, you can make out a new front bumper design with larger air intakes, lower ride height, while round the back the telltale RS oval exhausts indicate this as the range-topping model. Larger alloy wheels and bigger brakes will also be fitted.

The current car’s 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder engine will remain, but a slight increase in power to around 360bhp is likely. Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive system will also be standard.

The RS3 will ride on the MQB architecture that underpins the Audi A3 and Volkswagen Golf, ensuring it will be as light and as efficient as possible. The performance boost and likely weight reduction should improve on the current car’s 0-62mph sprint of 4.4 seconds. Expect an RS3 Saloon to follow the hatchback, too.

While the performance figures are impressive - surely using the 400BHP engine from the newly announced Golf R 400 would be more fitting?

I'm sure that people will buy these, but surely if in the market for a 360BHP car then there are cars that are designed from the beginning to be powerful cars that would be better than buying a tarted up granny wagon A3.
