The 2014 Jeep Cherokee has made its official debut at the New York Motor Show.

The Jeep 4x4 has three levels of off-road ability. Buyers can choose from traditional four-wheel drive, an upgraded system with a low-range mode and a top-spec set-up with a rear-locking differential.

A Trailhawk model features the latter as standard, as well
as unique bumpers for better approach and departure angles. It also rides one inch higher. Joining the Trailhawk in the range will be Cherokee Sport, Latitude and Limited models.

The new Cherokee will become the first car on sale with a nine-speed auto box, and is powered by a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine or a 3.2 V6 in the US. Buyers here are likely to be offered a 2.0-litre diesel, too.

It will arrive in the UK in June to take on the Ford Kuga, Mazda CX-5 and Honda CR-V. The Jeep Cherokee price is expected to start at £24,000.
