The Cosworth badge is back – on a Subaru Impreza. Based on a standard STi, and re-engineered by Cosworth, the 395bhp CS400 aims to set new performance standards. With only 75 being built, it
will be an instant collectors’ item, too.
Racing pedigree runs through the car’s long list of modifications, yet while power output has shot up from the standard 325bhp, so has the price tag: it now weighs in at an eye-watering £49,995.
The 2.5-litre boxer engine remains the same size as normal, but the added grunt comes courtesy of a brand new turbo and remapped ECU. Its internalsare hand finished to ensure that they cope with all the extra power, and the head gasket, con rods, cylinder heads and pistons are tougher and more durable.
A shortened throw and new clutch plate speed up the changes offered by the six-speed gearbox, giving the CS400 a Porsche 911 Turbo-rivalling 0-62mph sprint time of only 3.7 seconds.
Even so, don’t be fooled into thinking that the Cosworth Impreza will be a rock-hard track-day special. Although the ride has been lowered by 10mm and the track has been widened, Subaru claims that new Bilstein gas shock absorbers and Eibach springs improve comfort as well as giving sharper, more controlled handling at the limit. There are larger, 355mm ventilated discs from AP Racing at the front, with heavy-duty six-pot calipers to rein in the Scooby.
All of the upgrades were deliberately kept simple, the reasoning being that Subaru wanted the Cosworth to be a much faster, harder Impreza that is also a reliable, comfortable and usable everyday car.

When a car is in that price range the definition of desirability changes. Clearly a worthy road car, and probably the best looking STI from the factory, it is still - and let's *all* finally admit it - an ugly Subaru. There are dozens of other much more attractive rides, new and used, that are much easier to look at every day, and just as much fun to drive. Instant collector's item, maybe, but for 75 of the most aesthetically challenged buyers in the world. A ten-year-old STI still cuts a better profile than this lunar lander.
It may be that with Cosworth support and help it has a really tremendous performance but for me personally it has to look right and be quietly stylish without going over the top.
This car lokks ugly and as though bits were added on later by someone else!
And strangely good styling does not even cost more to design and build! If Karmann in their heyday can do it with the then Karmann Ghia then surely Subaru must be able to do it or?

I think they made a massive mistake making the Scooby a hatch back and an ugly one at that. They would have IMO been better placed to stick with the 4 door saloon layout but make it prettier to rival that of the Germans. I hardly ever see these on the road, I can count on one hand and that is telling.
ÂŁ50k, I'd be all over a nearly Carerra S PDK and put a nice after market exhaust and intake system on with a remap, instead of buying that all day long.
Considering Cosworth does the tuning, its a major disappintment. Only 75 to be built and that too at k????
You can have a 400hp STi over here (USA) for like 1500$ in aftermarket goodies. With full racing coilovers & racing brakes you could still be under k.
And after all that expensive Cosworth work you still get a "comfort tune" and NOT a track destruction craft. Summary? Epic Fail.
The monetary figures seem to get erased if you put the $ sign before the values. Read case 1 as 80k$ and case 2 as 50k$
It may have 50K performance (which you can achieve for less on your own!), but it emphatically does not have 50K looks. For that money it should. Subaru really muffed it on this redesign
Would it be OK to pull my caravan?
50K!!!! Im would rather buy a used Gallardo, which would kill the scooby on looks and pace. Agreed this is one ugly car. 'If it aint broke don't fix it' springs to mind. They have taking a winning formula; 4 door high performance saloon and replaced it with this vulgar looking thing. No wonder you don't see many of them!
I'm trying very hard to like the new Impreza. This has settled it for me. Even linking up with Cosworth hasn't turned this odd-job into a car you'd want to be seen in. Time to give up.
At best, a Ford Focus lookalike. At worst a Rover 25. Not good in my book.
Its very expensive for what it is. I agree with others, for that price you cold look at a Nissan GTR which is a much better looking car. The previous model Scobby was alot better in design as it was agreesive and more noticeable on the road whereas this looks like an average family saloon with a Halfords body kit slapped on it but you are paying a premium which doesn't justify the comparison to other performance cars.
