Flagship Volvo S60 Polestar is to go into limited production and will cost £100,000

The Volvo S60 Polestar is the fastest and most powerful Volvo ever built, and a production-ready version is due to reach the UK early next year with a price-tag of £100,000.

But the queue for this hand-built, all-wheel-drive super-Swede is likely to be short as only a handful are bound for Britain, according to Volvo UK boss Nick Connor.

The S60 Polestar is aimed at the BMW M3, Audi RS4 and Mercedes C63 AMG. Described by company insiders as “our volcanic Volvo”, it uses a 508bhp turbocharged version of the company’s 3.0-litre, straight-six petrol engine. This propels the car from 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 186mph.

The flagship S60 uses carbon-fibre body panels in an effort to minimise weight, and highlights future availability of Polestar upgrades from Volvo dealerships.

Meanwhile, the Swedish maker will extend its range of all-wheel-drive models with the XC40, which is set to debut at the Paris Motor Show in September. Described by Volvo as a V40 on steroids, it's the company's answer to the Audi A4 Allroad and should hit showrooms early next year.

Sounds very interesting indeed! £100k beyond my reach, but for those fortunate enough to be able to afford it, I hope they'll find it dynamically superior to its tear-away Teutonic peers. It'll certainly prove less common!

A one hundred grand Volvo is going to sell to a very exclusive audience - those people who still have driving licences despite being clinically insane

0-60 in 3.9secs and £100k... going to need new pants and remortgage.

We have "Polestars" in my City.
They are rough birds sliding up and down a piece of tubular metal.
Good luck with the name.
