BMW 6 Series Convertible vs Jaguar XK

BMW 6 Series vs Jaguar XK

We Brits love our drop-tops, and BMW’s new 6-Series Convertible looks set to be one of the summer’s hottest buys. But can it beat the Jaguar XK?

BMW 6-Series vs Jaguar XK twin

April 2011

A V8 roaring in your ears, the sun on your face and the wind in your hair... it’s motoring nirvana! But the trouble is, it carries an ever-increasing price. The Chancellor’s miserly reduction in fuel tax is scant consolation when you’re driving a car for which 20mpg economy is an achievement!

Yet there could be a way to enjoy top-class cabrio thrills and style without the big bills. BMW’s new 6 Series Convertible places as much emphasis on its advanced EfficientDynamics technology as it does on performance. And when compared with the flagship V8 650i, the 640i appears to offer a balance of pace, space and price which is better suited to driving in 2011.

To see if it does, we’ve brought the new entry-level 6-Series to meet a long-standing class favourite. The V8-engined Jaguar XK is understudy to the mighty XKR, but with 380bhp on tap, it’s far from underpowered.

At £69,950, it sits between the £65,695 640i SE and £73,430 650i SE. So can the Brit brute justify its running costs with a better all-round package? Or has it met its match in the clever six-cylinder BMW?

Are you insane?

You really think the Beemer is better than the Jag? The Jag isn't as practical? You dont buy these cars for practicality, you buy them because you want to look good and sound good. Jag wins every time for me, looks alone to die for and the sound of the V8 is awesome and it has sheer class.

Probably insane

The Jag looks stunning and is faster. It has already beaten the Porche 911 at its own game in the handling stakes (the BMW "...seems more sure-footed..." in corners is clearly a subjective comment). The BMW still looks like a kitchen appliance from the rear and a mutated amphibian from the front - let's see which one is in more demand!

Better is better

Firstly, the guys have actually been in both cars - you haven't.
Secondly, it's BMW's turbo six compared to Jag's V8, the hiding the BMW turbo V8 would give the Jag would be embarassing.

You may think the Jag looks stunning, I think it has a boring front end, a total lack of side design imagination. The dash looks like it's out of an old Mondeo.

Not to mention the massive technological headroom the BMW has over the Jag. It's time Jag gave it a BIG facelift.

Brit???

Isnt the Jag Indian now??

Better is better

Would the V8 have given the Jag a hiding? Doubtful as then it would be compared to the XKR!

Obviously looks is a matter of taste and BMW have kept to present German design philosophy by covering the thing with creases in the most unnecessary places. The Jag looks like a sports car while the 6 series looks like a 3 series on steroids.

So my choice would remain an XKR-S if I could afford one!

I am afraid the BMW would "EAT" the Jag in 550i M Sport form, I know I have driven both and bought the F10 550i M Sport, it just "blows the Jag away. In fact the XKR has it's work cut out, but hold on the New M5 is coming..................... Oops Jag Eaten for breakfast.

If you compare improved MPG with the 1980 equivalent - 6 series(?) and the XJS then taking into account inflation then it costs no more to fuel your car than then - so why are we complaining?
'cos we like to :)
As far as the Beemer is concerned that certain magic is missing - its just a bigger better faster 1 series whilst the Jag has that "I don't know what"

Apples with Apples?

One's a fat four seater convertible, the other's a svelte two seater. I'm not sure a buyer in the market for a Jag would even consider the BMW. Compare the Jag with the Merc SL and that would be rather more relevant.

Design is of course very subjective and while the BMW is certainly improved over it's predecessor, it's hardly what you'd call stunning. It still looks contrived and a little bloated, whilst Ian Callum's design is just classically proportioned and rather beautiful.

Doesnt seem quite like a fair fight [without seeing any numbers] if the BMW is fighting with a 6, while the Jaguar has a V8. If, as someone suggested, the BMW turbo V8 would demolish the Jaguar, it would need to be up against the supercharged Jaguar wouldnt it, not this car. And comparing one rag-top with four seats with a rag-top with two seems pretty pointless.
You guys can rabbit on all day about ugly bums, awful fronts, terrible creases, no creases, but at the end of the day beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Anyway, who exactly is ready to buy either of them???

it had to be the Beemer

i knew before i read the review the Beemer would win,its the easy safe choice, now it would only be the brave who would leave the crowds of BMW supporters and say the Jag is better. The jag is the sexier car but the Bmw will be better in every other way hence the win and that's why i would buy the Jag

By nickbsmooth on 10 May, 2011, 8:11pm

TheBeemer always

You want to compare like for like , how about the M6 against the XKR-S. The Jaguar's engine is is old, does not handle as well as the BM. Dont support the Jag because it is British. Support it because you genuinely believe it is better. I will always take the BM over the Jag, its a better car. I will be driving it not looking at it.

For what it's worth

Buy the BMW if you live in an 80's mansion with plastic neo-Georgian pillars in Weybridge

Buy the Jag if you want to look like some old codger who likes to poke his secretary before he gets heart failure

Facts and Figures

Verdict

We didn’t expect to make such a head vs heart decision when picking a winner here. On paper, it’s difficult to see how the BMW could lose, given its sheer mechanical brilliance. And we are pleased to report that it doesn’t disappoint in the real world – it can turn its hand to driving at high speeds on a track or ambling along in traffic, and does both with ease. Yet it was the more raucous V8 Jag that left us fighting for the keys. In spite of its faults, the XK still has immense character and charm, with an engine that makes your heart rate rise nearly as quickly as the fuel gauge falls. However, jump back into the more polished 6-Series, and the Brit starts to feel a bit one-dimensional. Yes, its performance is immense, but the Jag simply isn’t as practical, advanced or accurate as its less expensive opponent. Ultimately, it hands victory to the BMW.
