Wish you could have all-wheel-drive performance for the cost of a basic Ford Focus? Well, now you can, because the new Subaru Impreza hatch goes on sale from September, starting from £12,495 – only £200 more than a 1.4-litre Focus five-door!

For that you get the entry-level 1.5R, which has 106bhp and comes with Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD system, plus a dual-range low-ratio transfer gearbox. Standard kit includes climate control, a reach-adjustable steering wheel plus front, side and curtain airbags. For buyers after slightly more performance, there’s a 147bhp 2.0-litre engine, starting at £14,995 for the 2.0R and rising to £17,495 for the 2.0RX.

This higher specification car gets styling accessories including 17-inch alloys, a rear spoiler and side skirts. An auto box is available on all three versions for an extra £1,000.

Prices for the 227bhp 2.5-litre turbo WRX, due in November, and the potent WRX STi, set to arrive next spring, have yet to be announced
