BMW's new sports car concept revealed

German firm unveils 328 Hommage concept at Villa d'Este Concours

BMW 328 Hommage meets original

By Luke Madden

23rd May 2011

BMW has unveiled an all-new concept car at the Villa d’Este Concours in Italy. Called the 328 Hommage, the two-seater sports car is designed to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the BMW 328 racecar.

"With the BMW 328 Hommage, we wish to pay homage to the passion and inventiveness of the fathers of the BMW 328", explains Karl Bäumer, CEO of BMW Group Classic. "They created an icon, which is considered a milestone in the history of the automobile."

Watch the official video of the 328 Hommage being shot with the original car:

The roadster features trademark BMW styling cues and gets retro-inspired design touches like the asymmetric windscreen and bonnet mounted leather straps.

The lightweight 328 original weighed just 780kgs and BMW has concentrated on keeping weight down in the Hommage. The body is made from carbon-reinforced plastic – the same material used in the i3 electric car – and the stripped out cabin is simple and driver-focused.

Underneath the bonnet, is a 3.0-litre straight-six engine but BMW hasn’t revealed any official statistics or performance figures.

The 328 Hommage is unlikely to make production, but expect to see BMW’s future models – including the i8 hybrid supercar – getting a look inspired by the newcomer.

Whereas the Morgan three wheeler really does capture the essence of the original - this effort seems to be talking about another car entirely. I don't see much 328 in this at all.

Grrrrrr - get out of my way peasants

The front treatment is a tad aggressive. The BMW driving sales area managers who sit within 6 inches of your boot on the M25, even when there is a solid queue of cars in front of you, would love it.

Should have gone to Porsche...

Looks like Sid from the film Ice Age. Can BMW make a decent looking car anymore?

By gherkins123 on 24 May, 2011, 9:36am

Neahhhh, What's up Doc!

Not sure about the Bugsy front teeth... or the hot cross bun headlights... or the elastic bands round the body work. Looks like an Aiirfix kit in progress waiting for the glue to dry. The cockpit is claustraphobic and the rear disjointed. I'm sure the stylists could have done much better. Jessica Rabbit might drive a pink one.

That's all folks! tiddley dat ta dah! - ha ha ha.

(ps. don't call it hommage - 'cause it ain't)

The Fathers will be turning in their graves; this looks as if someone dropped a heavy weight from a great height on it. Passion is not a word I recognise alongside BMW's inventivness.

No Gherkins they cant!!
the 328 was a truly good looking car - the cartoon analogy for this new err.... thing is just right
I hope nobody ever pays me a hommage like that - I would be insulted

By ajs55 on 24 May, 2011, 12:20pm

328 Hommage? - you've got to be kidding!
A very nice car in its own right, though - good enough not to need the reflected glory of the old 328. A lack of imagination at BMW's PR department, I think, but top marks to the designers!

I GET IT!

I get it.....

The more I close my eyes the more it looks like a 328. In fact , when I close my eyes completely it looks just like a 328.

Unless I am much mistaken, it is a Z4 that has been attacked with a chainsaw. And not entirely successfully.

Well, there goes the photos

As always, everything sacrificed on the altar of advertisijng. I click on the right-hand side photos to bring up the enlargements and all I get now is the enlarged space together with the adverts top and RH-side, but no photos whatsoever. Thanks a lot Auto Express.

Hideous Incarnation

what are they paying their designers for, one would wonder when they can't even do retro properly ..... the likes of Henrik Fisker (E52 Z8) must be laughing their heads off at this lame attempt at 'paying homage' ...... by joining the Dodge club where the older originals are better in every dept. than the 21st century replacements

MORE SHEEP- BAAAHH!!

Bunch-a sheep on these forums the lot of you! Yeah, entitled to
your opinion and all that but come on? Anyone would think you were the enemy of the car? Already too much negativity out there.. So easy to come on here and slate everything/one, but how about giving some constructive criticism? Otherwise you just sound like a bunch of mumtons all baying for the designers blood.
I'm looking at the car and I'm seeing some nice proportions. Some of the details I'm not too keen on like the side straps- would prefer some intakes in a similar position instead but hey- I see the vibe their aiming for. Wheels could do with some more lightness- not so much metal and a bit more spindly? Nice effort though! Love the whole recessed thing with the lights and grill at the front- same at the back.
Anyway, I know that if any of you lambs were given the chance to own this car, you'd jump at it because off these pages and in the flesh, this thing would look propa trick! Nuff said.

If the front end was tidied up a little, this would be a real looker in my opinion! What is wrong with everyone? BMW gets slated for going back to 'me too' styling across its range and when they do something different, they still get slated! I wouldn't turn it down that's for sure!

By Lostash on 24 May, 2011, 8:30pm

Hey wilsonlaidlaw

He's probably sitting on your tail because you've missed 20 chances to pass & he's got things to do.

The car - nice shape, shame about the front end.

Lostash, it's about hating achievers - a very British thing. The rest of the world has got over the 70's BMW bashing, they are still bogged down in their prejudices. Of course, none of them has ever driven a BMW.

By larrygold on 25 May, 2011, 4:25am

WHAT ARE ALL YOU TALKING ABOUT?

IMO, This is the best looking BMW, designed in recent years.

By koupekid on 25 May, 2011, 11:21am

Good effort...

The front end is a bit of a dogs dinner, but the rest is actually quite attractive. At least it's different, which has been my main BMW designer gripe for sometime now. Oh, and lose the leather side straps, they will only end up leaving nasty scuff marks on the finish in that area due to vibration.

By sgtgrash on 25 May, 2011, 6:06pm

Don't worry

BMW have lost their way in the styling stakes over the last ten years, but don't worry the 328 Hommage will probably not look like this, it will most likely run true to form and look like a German brick, although I have a sort of liking for the look of the concept until we get to the cockpit, O’h what a mess!! Sports cars are all about a wooden dash and big clocks with neadles that easily flip into the red sector, well lets wait and see, but I’m not holding my breath.

By Bobbybev on 26 May, 2011, 12:03pm

Sheesh!!

Some of you schoolboy muppets just don't get it, do you!! Any excuse to bash BMW....

This is a concept... C.O.N.C.E.P.T.... A styling excercise that will be toned down if and when it ever sees the light of day! It is NOT supposed to look like the old car, it is supposed to epitomise the type of car that was startling to its origional audience, just as the new one is to todays crowds.

So, get back to lessons and try to grow up, just a little?

Well-said Spaceshift

At last some intelligent comments and also from - larrygold, koupekid, sgtgrash and summed-up precisely by Rumour.
As a concept I felt it succeeded absolutely and the profile and rear-end are terrific however the front end did make me wince.
I lamented the passing of the Z1 because it was idiosyncratic, an icon of its time. I think the Munich lads are back on track I hope so.
