Choose Focus EV's 'engine' note

Jet-turbine whine or the thrum of a traditional engine? Help Ford pick the low-speed noise the Focus Electric will make.

Focus Electric

By Jon Morgan

30th June 2011

Make some noise for the all-electric Focus. Ford wants to create an artificial engine sound for its first EV, but it wants you to help pick the right note.

The Nissan Leaf rival was unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show earlier this year, and is due to go on sale in the UK in late 2012. Powered by a 74bhp electric motor and 23kwh lithium-ion battery, the Focus Electric will have a range of up to 100 miles and a top speed of 84mph.

EVs are virtually silent on the road, thanks to the lack of a combustion engine. But while critics have praised their refined road manners, the potential danger to unwary pedestrians has caused controversy – especially in the US. Law-makers across the pond have been pushing for regulations that force manufacturers to make their electric vehicles noisier.

A Department for Transport spokeswoman has told Auto Express that it is currently researching whether electric and hybrid cars cause a higher rate of accidents with pedestrians – so we could see similar regulations in the UK one day.

To pre-empt any Government action, Ford has created four potential engine soundtracks and uploaded them to Youtube to gauge fans’ reactions. The majority are futuristic – as you’d expect for a car as technologically advanced as the Focus Electric – but there’s a more conventional option, too.

We’ve posted all four sound bites below so you can have a listen and vote for your favourite. But we also want to know what kind of soundtrack you think would work best for electric motoring in general. Would you prefer the hum of a traditional combustion engine or a warp-speed style whir? Or should manufacturers load cars with a range of noises and let customers pick for themselves? Tell us below.

None of the above. Why deliberately create noise pollution when the opportunity is offered to eliminate one of the worst sources of it?

How many people are killed every year by the silent bicycles which move around our towns and cities?

It isn't the noise or lack of it which makes people step out in front of cars.

Let's allow natural selection to take its course and those who are too stupid not to look before they step out into the road can be removed from the species leaving the rest of us to enjoy our new silent cars.

Sounds Good To Me

I now it will never get chosen as a 'car approaching' sound but my favorite would be the 'sonar' sound that is heard in submarines. Hopefully any engineered sound will be projected outside the car and not in.

Nissan Leaf has 110 hp motor for god sake!

Jon Morgan should have researched rather than guess the HP of the Leaf's motor which is 110 HP!

Anyway, I definitely feel E.U legislation needs to be drawn up to prevent noise generating E.V's.

Next we will see companies offering after market kits that generate huge amounts of Engine noise that otherwise doesn't exist in E.V's!

If pedestrians paid attention and not walk out under traffic and cross at pedestrian crosses they would be a lot safer. And that goes for blind people too!

People have to be responsible for themselves and pay attention and take out the mp3 player headphones, which again is another point, no matter how loud cars are people with headphones will not hear them!

How many pedestrians are injured already even with noisy engines all over the place ? and most of the accidents are because of stupidity by the pedestrian!

I can see the boy racers that drive around in their old 1.0L cars with holes in the exhaust driving around with massive amplifiers with annoying noise coming from the speakers!

Noise is actually a form of torture and many researches have been done about noise pollution and it's effects to human general well being!

By the way autoexpress it would be nice if you included E-mail notification to replys to comments!

Sorry for the double post!

Sorry for the double post, I didn't press post twice!

That happened before!

use your eyes and look both ways!

Anyone who bases their decision to cross a road on sound alone needs to get their head checked. Why not turn your head left and then right to make sure nothing is coming before you cross the road. Push bikes don’t make much noise so are we going to have to add sounds to them as well?

I can’t imagine any artificial sound will beat the real thing.

I’m sure people will find ways of jail breaking the software and making their little car sound like a Ferrari.

This shouldn't be happening

Why can't we just resolve both matters and switch to Biofuel, as it is effectively is CO2 neutral, can safely outrun a tortoise and people will be able to hear engines. We shouldn't rely on technology for everything. What if the sound system breaks? bet you never thought of that!

Silence isn't golden

Really surprised at all the ballyhoo about silent vehicles on an enthusiasts site. We need a little noise so that we can penetrate the psyche of our fellow road users so they are aware of our presence. I am also a motorcyclist and all this reminds me of the old adage "Loud pipes save lives". Scooting along silently is neat, but it can also get you run down. Then there is the plain old viseral joy of the sound of a well tuned mill. Now I'm not talking about some boy racers fart can equipped rust bucket,as those annoy me as much as the next guy, just something noticable enough to get the attention of the peds and the tools in their soundproofed cocoons.
If there going to offer downloads,my choice is a Ford 427 side oiler. That ought to keep the pedestrians safe!
