Volkswagen Up!

By Dan Strong

07th October 2011

Volkswagen has revealed prices for the new up! will start at £7,995. Limited-edition flagship models will cost £11,180.

Order books have already opened, and the car will arrive in showrooms next spring.

Revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the three-door up! will be available with a choice of three 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engines – one of which will offer fuel saving Bluemotion technologies.

Trim levels include the Take up!, Move up! and High up! – and there are two specials edition, the up! black and up! white.  A five-door version is expected to join the line-up in the second half of 2012.

Take up!
Priced £7,995, the Take up! gets a  1.0-litre 58bhp engine. Standard specification includes body-coloured bumpers, daytime running lights, front and side head and chest airbags. There’s also a CD player with an MP3 jack plug, rear ISOFIX childseat anchors and 14-inch steel wheels.

Move up!

The £8,970 Move up! gets everything offered by the Take Up! and adds remote central locking, air-conditioning, electric front windows and 60:40 split and fold rear seats. Outside, the Move Up! has colour-coded door mirrors and handles.

High up!
At £10,390 the 73bhp High up! comes with heated front seats, and a leather trimmed steering wheel. Electrically adjustable door mirrors are also offered and the car gets VW’s new removable sat-nav system. The High Up! is distinguished by its front fog lights and 15-inch alloy wheels.

up! black and up! white
Flagship up! black and up! white models are based on the High up! and cost £11,180. Cars get black pearl or pure white metallic paint and chrome door mirror caps and door side strips. 16-inch alloy wheels are also offered, with body-coloured centre sections. Inside there is a body-coloured dash, special ‘stripes’ upholstery and carpet mats.

Just one question...

Is there an up! yours?

Rather low spec

Can't belive they're still building cars with manual windows and Nissan were delivering the same BHP from a 1.0 litre engine back in 1993. The Kia Picanto looks better in every way, is cleaper and on sale now.

Never mind about the price differences

There's no doubt the up! will probably be more expensive than the Citigo and Mii (Skoda and SEAT), but the reason why is the extra sense of interior quality. That's why I'd take the up! regardless.

I'll hold off for the Skoda!

Personally, I think the Skoda looks better, so I'll be buying their model instead. As for VW having a better quality interior, well my brother has a Golf and my cousin an Octavia Scout and IMO the Skoda's interior finish is better.

Think about the wider alternatives first

I liked the look of this car, but it still seems expensive for what is supposedly the cheapest entry into new car ownership.

Have a look around and you can find much better value for money - some websites are selling new Hyundai i30's for 9.5K with mid-range spec - a lot more car for the money - 10.5K for cheaper to run diesel models in the same spec. I know the i30 will be replaced next year but the current car is still good.

As mentioned by n50pap above, the Skoda version of the Up! will not only probably be cheaper, it'll probably be better equipt too, and Skodas seem to have better reliability (despite using the same 'bits') and better customer service.

I know my reasons for considering something like the Up! but with so many good deals on bigger and better value cars, I know where I'd spend my money.

VW fanboys

Why are people beginning to be obsessed with comparing VW's, Skoda's and Seats (and Audi's)?
You all know they are the same cars, made from the same VW parts bin...the only differences are that the seats and other interior trim are made from slightly differing quality of materials, and the exterior bolt on panels have one or two extra creases.......surely a car is more than a comfy seat??

You are not getting one-over on VW and Audi by buying a skoda or a seat...they are doing you over and laughing at you, because you are giving them extra sales, and they are doing nothing to earn it!

Buy something more interesting elsewhere, something that's been designed from the floor up to be individual and not designed to be reproduced in many different forms.

Yes!

Westfield14 is totally right! The Picanto looks better, better spec, and cheaper.

Eight grand...

...puts it toe to toe with the new Panda.
Good luck VW... you're going to need it.

Expensive entry level

Maybe they should call it C**k Up!

Why glass?

I agree with n50pap, the Skoda looks best of the three. Those all-glass rear panels never look good, vid. Volvo C30, various Hondas. Can't see the point from a practical point of view either.
