Drop-top version of the Volkswagen E-Bugster has been revealed on the eve of the Beijing Motor Show

Volkswagen has unveiled a roofless version of the E-Bugster concept ahead of the Beijing Motor Show, previewing the look of the new Beetle Speedster.

As with the original E-Bugster coupe, seen at the Detroit Motor Show, the open-top car remains strictly a two-seater, powered by an 85kW electric motor and a 28kWh lithium-ion battery. It promises to cover 0-62mph in 10.8 seconds.

Volkswagen claims a range of 110 miles from a full charge, and a quick-charging system should give a ‘refill’ in only 35 minutes.

This electric set-up is known as Blue-e-motion. We tried it on a prototype Golf, and it previews the drivetrain that will power future versions of the family hatch and the Beetle.

The drop-top model looks identical to the E-Bugster coupe, but has a chrome strip running in a semi-circle around the tops of the doors, and even around the spoiler.

Joining the car on VW’s stand in Beijing is a new range-topping CC, with a 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine. It covers 0-62mph in 7.4 seconds, and has climate control and sports seats.

VW is also taking the wraps off the Phaeton Exclusive Concept, which features an even more upmarket cabin, plus the Chinese market-only Lavida family saloon.

Surely the name will have to be changed if ever marketed in an English speaking country? One stage worse than the Renault Wind!

It look interesting but don't make a new Herbie.
