Our exclusive images reveal how the new Ford crossover is taking shape

The Ford Kuga is getting a baby brother – and Auto Express has the best pictures yet of the exciting new crossover.

It’s set to take on the Nissan Juke when it hits dealers next summer, and give the company yet another big-selling model.

The 4x4 is based on the Fiesta supermini, and is due to make its official world debut at the Geneva Motor Show next March. It has already been spotted testing across Europe, as well as on the streets of London. But these exclusive new images reveal how the car is shaping up.

Our illustrations show that much of the styling is inspired by the Vertrek concept, seen at January’s Detroit expo. It gets the same multi-layered headlights, sculpted bonnet and lowered roofline. The bodywork has grown to accommodate the SUV’s increased proportions, with pronounced wheelarches front and back, and the Fiesta’s chassis has been stretched to provide wider tracks.

Chrome inserts on the grille, and twin exhausts that sit flush with the rear bumper, help to boost its kerb appeal.

Despite the big concept car wheels, the newcomer’s ground clearance – combined with the chunkier bumpers – hint at enough off-road potential to worry the Juke. However, its main competition will be from Vauxhall’s new junior off-roader, also due on sale next year.

Although the design isn’t a radical departure from the rest of the model range, a Ford spokesman explained: “Until an all-new Fiesta arrives, everything that comes out on that platform will share the same Kinetic design language.”

However, a new concept – rumoured to debut the brand’s fresh family look – is tipped to appear at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show. In an increasingly crowded segment, Ford will have
to strike a delicate balance, giving the SUV sharp styling, yet enough practicality to keep family buyers happy.

Considering the firm’s reputation for driver appeal, the car should certainly ride and corner with poise, on or off road. A choice of two and four-wheel drive will be offered.

There will also be a wide range of petrol and diesel engines. The petrol line-up will include two versions of the firm’s efficient EcoBoost turbo powerplants: a new three-cylinder 90bhp 1.0-litre unit, and the powerful 1.6-litre from the bigger Focus.

All models are likely to get stop-start as standard, but alternative drivetrains may be offered, too. A more eco-friendly car, with lower emissions, could be introduced later on, borrowing technology from Ford’s hybrid C-MAX.

With prices starting from around £16,000, the baby Kuga looks set to offer the complete package.

What?

What the hell is this? Where's the styling? Mind you, it doesn't have to look that good to be a million times better-looking than the Juke.

Yet another awful Ford design creation.

This car looks to me like something a young typical design student could do, not someone who has years of experience and is a master designer. I suppose, it's just aimed at the masses who wouldn't know any better, abit like fast food outlets really.

Love this, it looks good. Lets hope it stays looking like this when released and not too watered down.

Dreadful

A terrible attempt at making the Fiesta look more butch.

It looks like a teenagers attempt to customise his first car., and would be happier on show in Max Power magazine

moaning minnies

anyone else fed up - every car gets slated for it's design by some people who have nothing better to do - come on, give us examples of design - an aston martin? the perfect competitor on price and utility eh?
One suspects that If Ford designed the most beautiful car in the world these people would moan as Ford is "common" and if they slag such cars off THEY'll look superior (NO!)

The new Ford Elcheapo!

Whatever happened to "style" at Ford?
Guess their designers used to play with Transfomers as kids.
Sadly, this has transformed into a runt!

AE mocking up photo shopped drivel, AE it gets tedious, why do you bother?

People, please note the editorial on this artical, rather than just looking at the 'spy shots' or as Auto Express say; 'as our illustrations show'. Hence these are yet more BS attempts to claim exclusive shots of a car using guess work, artistic license and existing concept cars.

Auto Express wouldn't know a genuine spy shot even if it came shaken not stirred!

Auto Express YOU ARE PATHETIC! THAT'S WHY I COME ON HERE AND DON'T WASTE MONEY ON YOUR MAG, IT'S A COMIC!

REALLY, WHERE IS THE PROOF?

a Ford spokesman explained: “Until an all-new Fiesta arrives, everything that comes out on that platform will share the same Kinetic design language.”

WHAT WAS HIS NAME?

However, a new concept – rumoured to debut the brand’s fresh family look – is tipped to appear at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show. SO YOU HAVEN'T GOT A CLUE WHAT IT WILL LOOK LIKE?

Calm down dears...

...it's only a new toy car. I suspect Auto Express (and car makers) have software - a sort of sophisticated Photoshop - where you just feed in a number of existing models. And voila, your new model is born. In this case, Fiesta + Kuga + Vertrek.

By Anorak17 on 28 July, 2011, 11:31am

PS

Vertrek is a good name. Didn't know where Ford had got it from, until I was sitting in Schipol Airport recently. Doh!

By Anorak17 on 28 July, 2011, 11:34am

You still havnt got it have you?

All those slagging Ford design off above - This is not a Ford design! Its an Auto(Sun)Express photshop thats taken a Fiesta and pumped it up - The real car (if it even exists at all) will bear no relation to this.

Is it really the New EcoSport (Fiesta SUV)?

Actually I think the new Fiesta SUV will be the next generation of Ford EcoSport. Ford in Brazil is answerable for the worldwide project, in common work with other design and engineer centers around the globe. A very reliable source is this link/site: http://quatrorodas.abril.com.br/noticias/nova-ford-ecosport-roda-testes-bahia-290706_p.shtml.

By Fabiano_Pires on 1 August, 2011, 7:09pm

Or maybe...

Ford just extrapolated their image from the actual car spotted under test in London, eh?
