Our pick of the best sports cars, from the thrilling Porsche 911 GTS to the great-value Toyota GT 86

There's nothing more important in a sports car than driving enjoyment. If you're looking to buy a new sports car, you are certainly lookin for something that's fun to drive - whether it be the stunning performance of a supercar or the back-to-basics enjoyment of a cheap coupe or roadster.

The best sports cars to buy these days aren't useless when it comes to driving them every day, though - some of our favourite cars on this list would be almost as happy sitting in commuter traffic as they are on a fast, clear road.

You don't even have to spend a huge amount of money to get yourself into a great sports car - some of our favourite models cost less than your average family car. Of course, if you want to splash out then there are some superb choices at the higher end of the new car market.

There are some sporty diesel cars available, but one could argue that no diesel is ever going to be a true sports car - it's petrol that really is the fuel of choice for sports car fans.

Sports cars tend to be full of useful equipment, being at the top end of the manufacturr's range. However some cars, like models from Caterham, are a fully stripped-back experience that have virtually nothing on board apart from the essentials: a heater, windscreen wipers and a steering wheel. What more do you really need on a Sunday drive?

So those after a sports car should decide what kind they are after - a basic driving machine that is lightweight, simple and fun to drive, or a full-featured and expensive supercar with loads of equipent and a powerful engine under the bonnet.
