It's tough to define a sports car - but top of the list should always be driving enjoyment. Whether it's a back-to-basics roadster, or a supercar-rivalling coupe, a true sports car should put a big grin on your face when the road gets twisty.
The best sports cars aren't just fun on a back road, though - most of the cars on this list are equally happy slugging it in commuter traffic or sitting on a long motorway cruise.
Buying all this driving fun can be expensive, but it doesn't have to be - some of our favourite models cost less than a family hatchback, while those willing to splash out can find some fantastic choices at the top end of the market.
Our list doesn't contain any diesel cars. One could argue no diesel should ever be considered a true sports car but there are some that challenge this - like the Audi TT Ultra. However, petrol remains the fuel of choice for sports car fans, even with the hybrid electrical assistance that's beginning to make tracks in the sector.
Some sports cars are more luxurious than others - at one end there are the technology-packed models that sit at the top of the range, while the lower end can see stripped back experiences featuring the bare essentials. After all, Caterham has proved that all you really need is a heater, windscreen wipers, a seat and a steering wheel.
So those after a sports car should decide which kind they are after - a lightweight, basic driving machine or a full-featured super car with a powerful engine. Whichever they choose, they'll find something to like on our list.
