Honda cans screaming hot hatch as engine falls foul of emissions regulations.

It’s the end of an era. Production of the current generation of Honda’s fire-breathing Civic Type R hot hatch is due to finish in October. The car’s high-revving 2.0-litre VTEC engine is to blame, as it does not meet forthcoming Euro V emissions regulations.

Instead of reengineering the unit the meet the stricter standards, which come into force for all new cars in January 2011, the UK market Type R will be axed and replaced by a new model when the all-new Civic arrives in late 2011.

Over 12,000 Civic Type Rs have been sold in the UK since January 2007, and although the last UK cars will be sold by December, Honda’s Swindon plant will continue to build the car for the Australian and South African markets.

To celebrate the fastest Civic’s time in existence, Honda is putting on a special Type R event which coincides with the Silverstone round of the British Touring Car Championship. The race takes place on 22nd August, an Honda will provide a special Type R only car park, hospitality and the chance to do a Lap of Honour of the Northamptonshire track during the day.

And if you’ve always hankered after one of Honda’s Red H-badged hatches, there’s never been a better time to snap up a bargain. The Silverstone event also coincides Honda slicing £2,230 off the list price of the Type R, which will now start at £19,495.

The offer covers the Type R GT, Type R LSD and Type R MUGEN 200 models, and runs from now until 29 September.

Ariel Atom?

What does this mean for the Ariel Atom which uses the same engine?

I guess Honda will have to continue producing the engine in small quantities for people wanting replacement engines in their old Type Rs, so maybe they will have enough to continue supplying Ariel?

And I think Ariel are not subject to the emission laws due to the small volume manufacturer exclusion.

Good question...

Thanks for the comment about the Atom.

I gave Ariel boss Simon Saunders a call and he said that the firm has no problem with supply of engines from Honda, so Atoms will continue to use the Type R engine for the foreseeable future.

Looking further forward, he said that the firm will have to look at different engines, and with manufacturers downsizing to take into account changing emissions laws that makes choosing the next unit for the Atom more tricky.

However, he did say that it's likely to be sourced from Honda, as Ariel has built up such a good relationship with the Japanese firm.

R-screamers!

Probably the best 4cyl engine of the sporting kind...

Totally addictive pleasure of a power-plant which forces the driver to grow a pair of horns and whip the lever around as if it was the devils trident itself inflicting pain!

Shame Honda never made the Civic into an RR by sticking in the S2000`s 237bhp unit and making it available, as a mass market sporting-hatch rather than waiting for a number of years too make a very expensive Mugen special...

Always preferred Civic`s over Golfs and will be interested to see what happens with the next sporting Civic... if indeed they actually do one?

Upsetting to think though that at present Honda doesnt really have a car in its armoury that is actually of a purely sporting variety!!! Lucky older Honda`s last so well...

Honda we need to see pictures of your new baby sports roadster that is in the pipeline and have a CRZ-R too.

Goodbye Type 'R', hello Type 'r'

Considering the amount of engine downsizing going on within other manufacturers ranges at the moment, don't be too surprised if the next Type R is a super-fizzy 1.4 or 1.6 litre...

B16A

Seem to remember Honda managed to make another amazing gem of an engine...

That was the B16A unit that went into the Civic and CRX... Honda squeezed 160BHP and 100BHP per litre out of that little engine in the early 90`s and it revved to a deliciously manic screaming 8250rpm with absolutely no difficulty!

If Honda did that nearly 20 years ago; then surely a sporty Honda unit made today (with the added benefits of IMA) could easily push out a figure above the 200bhp of the 2.0 I-VTEC of the Civic Type R?

We wait with technologically minded baited breath!
