Volkswagen cross up!

Full details and pictures of the rugged new VW cross up! following its Geneva Motor Show debut

Volkswagen has revealed the cross up!, a rugged version of VW's city car that's available as a five-door model only and could be coming to the UK.

Unlike the standard Volkswagen up!, it gets plastic wheelarch protectors, chunkier bumpers, roof rails and 16-inch alloy wheels.

Engines are identical to the regular city car’s, so that means a 1.0-litre three-cylinder available with two outputs: 74bhp and 54bhp. All models will be front-wheel-drive only. Inside there’s unique upholstery and extra chrome trim.

VW is currently deciding whether to bring the cross up! here, with a spokesman claiming the decision could go either way. If it does, the car will top the up! range, starting from around £11,780.

Like this - and with roof rails for my canoe, too.

Looks much less bland than the standard version although, like the latter, it may look worse in reality than in photographs. Still has a pesky 3 cylinder engine so await journos banging on about "thrum"!

Supermini is the fastest growing segment. VW needs to invest money in its diminishing Polo rather than wasting money up here, up there, up this, up that.

It's a poxy city car. It's hardly going to have a 5.2 supercharged V12 engine is it.

Rover Streetwise anyone?

No but the principal competitor (FIAT Panda) offers four cylinder power units both petrol and diesel

Why do manufacturers insist on bolting on plastic this and plastic that and trying to make out its a 'rugged' version.. it is no more capable than the standard Up but it will just carry a premium despite it's inability.

Go buy a Fiat then???

Don't want either or a C.1/107/Aygo for that matter. Of them all the FIAT seems to have the most flair though. We need to avoid being a fanboy for any particular make.

Can we have some useful information such as how much additional ground clearance it has?

At last, a car to make the Ecosport look beautiful
