These images show that test drivers are getting less cautious about where they take their priceless prototype – and our spies have got closer to the new Ford than ever before!

Try to ignore the fake black plastic skin applied to the prototype. Underneath, we can get a revealing glimpse of the sleek hatchback that’s set to take on Vauxhall’s Corsa and Renault’s Clio.

The rising waistline of this test car is clear to see, as are the large swept-back headlamps. Viewed from the side, the sheer scale of the new Ford is laid bare. The wheelbase is much longer than that of the current car, while the large tail-lights are very similar to those fitted to the Verve concept (pictured).

The supermini will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show next March, before it goes on sale in the summer of 2008.

Under the bonnet, there will be a wide range of engines. Petrol choices will include 1.3, 1.6 and 1.8-litre Duratec SCi direct-injection units, while diesel buyers can take their pick from the 1.4 and 1.6-litre TDCi powerplants Ford has co-developed with PSA Peugeot Citroen.
