Looks can be deceptive. The Audi A6, for example, appears to be a big, bulky car. One that you'd expect to be comfortable and refined, but not offering a great degree of agility. Yet from the driver's seat it shrinks around you, and demonstrates fleet of foot many smaller models would struggle to match.

And now the firm has introduced an entry-level version. The 2.4 SE comes with a new V6 engine and front-wheel-drive, in place of the 4x4 quattro system fitted to upmarket variants. At ΂£24,175, it is competitively priced. Standard kit includes four electric windows, climate control, six airbags, a CD system and alloys, so even though this is the most basic A6, it's impressively equipped. But the specification isn't its most attractive asset, for that lies under the bonnet.

The new V6 delivers 177bhp, which gives the A6 a 0-60mph time of 8.9 seconds, and a top speed of 143mph. So performance is willing, but even that's not the engine's best point. Where the Audi scores highest is in refinement, as the 2.4-litre unit is one of the smoothest powerplants we've ever tried, whisper quiet at idle and delivering unruffled power throughout the rev range.

The car comes with a choice of six-speed manual or automatic gearboxes, and if you can afford the ΂£1,700 premium for the self-shifter, it's the one to go for. It's a better option for exploiting the engine's exceptional smoothness, compared to the manual, which slightly takes the edge off the car's refinement.

Otherwise, the lack of four-wheel-drive is barely tangible, as the 2.4 shares the agility of its more expensive companions in the A6 line-up.

FIRST OPINION

Offering good value for money and impressive smoothness, the 2.4-litre V6 is our pick of the A6's petrol engines. But fleet buyers and high-mileage drivers will still favour the 3.0 TDI diesel, thanks to its low CO2 emissions and strong fuel economy.
