We took our own long-term 2.0i to Greatest Drives. And even though it has smaller wheels and lacks the stiffer Bilstein dampers and six-speed gearbox of the Sport version, it was still more than a match for most rivals. Light, agile and eager, the rear-wheel-drive Mazda turns in sharply and responds to commands instantly with no slack in any of the controls.
The only downside is body roll, which penalised it slightly during high-speed changes of direction. The 158bhp engine isn’t that charis-matic, but performance is strong and, with the traction control disengaged, the MX-5 becomes very playful, without intimidating at the limit.
Nor was it slow on the track – less than a second separated it from the more powerful Focus ST and Golf GTI. But best of all is its on-road behaviour. This is a car that can be enjoyed at modest speeds in all conditions.
