We've had exclusive access to the DC100 Sport Defender concept, so we took it to Santa Monica Pier to ask what the public think of it

Land Rover claims that the design of its all-new Defender hinges on how its two concepts - the DC100 and DC100 Sport – are received at the world’s motor shows.

The technology underneath the new Defender will be make it the most highly advanced Land Rover ever, featuring an advanced Terrain Response system that will automatically analyse the surfaces you’re driving on and adjust the suspension accordingly.

There’s also a ‘Wade Aid’ in the pipeline, using sonar to measure water depth and obstacles under the water line, then automatically alter the car’s settings.

But the final shape of the exterior design is still very much up for debate, so to see what the American public makes of it, Auto Express took the convertible Sport down to Santa Monica pier, and let them have an in-depth look.

It looks really cool – lots of fun, but hardy, too. It’ll be totally indestructible. I’d love to see it in Reno, Nevada.

Don Messer, North Carolina USA
It looks real nice and I like the fact that it’s stylish yet functional, with the tow hooks at the back.

Andy Noparast, West LA, California, USA
It’s something new, sexy and fresh and not like the Japanese cars here. There’s heritage and character to this car.

Andrew Wilkinson, Kirkby Lonsdale, Lancashire, UK
It’s a real eye stopper – funky and fun. I thought it was a Range Rover, Land Rovers are more basic, but not this.

Raymond Ibrado, Phillipines
I’ve downloaded pictures of the car from the internet, it looks fantastsic. It’s two cars in one: sporty and a real 4x4.

Veronica Smith, Santa Monica, California, USA
Wow – it’s awesome. This is a real Beverley Hills car for people in the entertainment industries. Girls will love it.

Paul and Julie Ha, Columbia, South Carolina USA
We’ve never seen an SUV convertible – it’s very futuristic. It looks like it’ll work on the beach or up a mountain.

Kevin Maniece and Lita Decolongon, West LA, California, USA
The retro-looking lights are great and I like the colour. Four-wheel drive is important, as is a hybrid version.

Michael Popzun, Leverkusen, Germany
It looks very expensive, but it’s a monster car – it’s a great composition. When I have the money, I’ll buy one.

Jennifer Grotzinger, Pennsylvania, USA
I’d like to see myself driving this. Not many 4x4s look this good and I like the three seats – it’s ideal for us.

The above says it all really :-(

If Landrover were really interested in gauging a reaction to the Defender replacement they'd have shown it on a muddy hillside in Wales to a group of farmers. However, I suspect they could have guessed what sort of reaction they would get to it there.

Jury is out

I can't picture one in a muddy field.
Nor as a military vehicle.
Nor as an armoured police vehicle.
