Lexus RX

New Lexus SUV gains extra seats but retains familiar look.

Lexus RX front

08th July 2008

‘Evolution not revolution’ is the name of the game for the new Lexus RX, caught by our spies here undergoing testing before its spring 2009 launch.

Even in this heavy disguise the new RX looks strikingly familiar to the current model, although look closely and you’ll see some subtle differences. At the front, the headlights have taken on a more rakish profile, sweeping back towards the wing mirrors, and the rear lights are more distinctive, no longer sitting flush with the tailgate.

The biggest change comes in the form of a pair of extra seats – the RX is set to be available as a seven-seater for the first time, giving the Japanese SUV parity with the BMW X5.

The mainstay of the range will be a 3.5-litre V6 mated to a six-speed gear box, and an electric hybrid will appear in 2010 too.
