Just when I thought that the new MX-5 could break the mould and gain sportier styling, AE comes up with this pile cutesy dollop, and AE seem to be pretty good at this rendering lark...
What a turd! I can't see the real model looking this bad, but if it does, Mazda deserve all the failure it will bring.
I bought a current model MX5 Cabriolet Coupe and, contrary to what most magazines report, it was the worst car ownership experience I've had in over 20 years of driving - the car, dealerships and manufacturer all letting me down badly. I had to get rid of the damn thing at a large loss.
So whatever the new one looks like, I won't be buying it.
Gav I find it hard to believe anything of what you have printed is true...
Dont have an MX5 anymore, but my ownership was a good experience with a car that was 100% reliable, fun if you drove it real hard, bags of character and with competitive servicing pricing far lower than that of the over-rated German competition that cost many thousands more to start with, and arent as fun or as good to drive!
Next time gavsmit stop telling pork pies... You aint foolin anybody...
p.s out of choice, i'd rather be seen in a MX5 than a ghastly BMW rip-off of it,(with the BMW appaling image) anyday of the week!
I also do not believe a single word you said GAVsmit....
Overwhelmingly the Mazda MX-5 has been the most successful ownership experience and rating out of ANY Sports Car made...ever.
PLEASE do not get carried away by this Photo-shop rendering taken from a US Patent Paper Sketch..
It tells/shows absolutely NOTHING about what the new Mazda MX-5 will look like.
How anyone can think up this design from a FRONT ONLY one dimensional line drawing is beyond me..
JUST wait and see in October at the Tokyo MS.
Here's to hoping that your artists suck.
I think some people above take preview sketches and artists impressions shown in AE too literally. It is just an indication of how the car may look - its hardly the production model. I think if Mazda stick to the same tried and trusted formula, the next model will be a great car. I find 'Gavsmit' comments surprising - my mum owned a 2008 MX5 coupe cabrio for nearly two years - lots of fun and completely reliable. Incidentally, I agree with 'Legiol', I too would rather have an MX5 than some overweight, overpriced German like an SLK or Z4....
Interesting headlights (not sure they're aggresive enough). I like the wheels...(similar to mini cooper). Would love to see a turbo charged or supercharged version.
Cool, oh yeh, as soon as i saw it I got a shiver running down my spine, surely this is not the next mx5, this one was built by Bob the Builder in Toytown whilst he was drinking his second bottle of gin after escaping from his padded cell.
At the moment I cannot think of any other car I have ever seen that would destroy the reputation of mazda as rapidly as this THING would (it's 10 times worse than the scorpio). Please send the person who came up with this design and send him/her back to primary school and bring in a proper designer
It looks IMO like something from Disney/Pixar's "Cars", although that might just be the colour.
As long as they get the emissions down, that'll be an improvement. In the past, they've been quite expensive to tax which, along with fairly average fuel consumption, probably put a lot of people off.
We're not all fans of style over substance!
No - it's NOT pictured as your headline says - it's an AE artist impression. I sometimes wonder why I bother to read this tenuous rubbish.
Was this designed by Disney? As it looks like some thing from the CARS film!
Laughable caricature of a Miata like vehicle. This lousy drawing, does not worry me about the MX-5's future look.
Regards reliability, mine(1993) at 164,000 miles has yet to have a major problem and still has the original timing belt and clutch. Just replaced the original accessory belts and all engine hoses and radiator at 163,000. It had been brake pads and tires only for 163,000 miles.
All I can say is I hope you come to truly appreciate what I've detailed above by having a similar experience. Then you can try and put into polite words what you think of people that call you a liar afterwards.
All the best.
Lordy, lordy.
She's an ugly piece of metal.
Reminds me of a cheap British kit car from the 60s.
I hope you are so, so wrong! The MX5 is best left well alone, so I really hope and pray that Mazda haven't loused it up like they have loused up the 5 people carrier which has gone from best styled to worst styled in one move!
Red Herring or complete change of direction.
The following designs would be more probable.....
than a remake of the Austin Healey Sprite Mk 1 (without the frogeyes)

AE could have done better.
Here is an image of new MX5 - as posted on following site.
Now this image could be nearer the mark..........

This has to be a joke, right?
is this replacement based on the mx-2 concept we saw 2 1/2 years ago, and haven't heard now't about since...?
