These are the best shots yet of the fastest Astra ever! The high-performance VXR model looks set to shake-up the hot-hatch market as it goes head-to head with the Focus ST and VW's Golf GTI.
Our spies caught this protoype undergoing winter testing and while it may look like a regular five-door model, look closely and you'll spot the widened track and revised front end, complete with larger air intakes.
That's because under this mule's body lies the new three-door only Astra VXR. Powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, the new VXR should put out around 250bhp and 320Nm of torque. That will be good enough for a 0-60mph time of 6 seconds and a top speed of 150mph.
But the newcomer won't just be quick in a straight line. Vauxhall's adaptive FlexRide suspension means drivers can choose to put the car in 'Sport' or 'VXR' mode which will improve throttle response and stiffen the suspension for more agile handling. For a softer ride, drivers can simply push the 'Standard' button.
The finished article will have the visual muscle to match its performance with a coupe-like body, complete with a rakish roofline, ground-hugging body-kit and a large central exhaust pipe replacing the twin exhausts shown here.
Inside, as with the rest of the Astra range, the newcomer gets a totally redesigned cabin with high-quality soft-touch materials will be used, while equipment including a Bluetooth phone connection and an MP3 compatible stereo are set to appear.
The Astra VXR will be publicly unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in September this year. Sales will begin in early 2011 starting at around £22,000.

This isn't the VXR, but rather something that will sit between the VXR and the current 1.6 SRi. Most likely Vauxhall will revive the GSI badge or even better, the GTE legend!
By the styling tweaks, it can be seen that it is rather more mature than aggressive and so is something that will go head to head with the Golf GTI and Focus ST, hence the power of 250 BHP.
As for the VXR; it will go against the Golf R and Focus RS with around 300 BHP and an agressive bodykit. Most likely the front end will borrow from the Insignia VXR and there will be a single aggressive tailpipe in the center rather then two mature ones on either end.
Also like the Golf R and Focus RS, it is unlikely that the VXR model will be in five door guise.
Furthermore the pricetag of around 22K reflects a competitor for the GTI and ST rather than the R and RS.
since when do they do astra vxr 5drs ... they never made any of their hot hatchs in 5drs mk 2GTE / 3GSI / 4GSI / 5VXR to curent ?
and if this is the VXR i most definitly wont be trading mine in for one of these !
just hope when the new Astra VXR does arrive it doesn't look as though they've been to Halfords with Fifty Quid in their pocket to but the add-ons.
It does not look anything special this Astra VXR. The old one's looked very different from the normal run of the mill model's. And where is the colour coded front Vauxhall V. Not good in chrome effect.
While i don't think they will ever make a 5 door astra vxr that car in question could hve the new engine and running gear and just as the article said..be a prototype.
Oh and to clear up the 5 door performance astra question Bosley YES they did make a 5 door hatchback GTE mk 2..because i had one many many years back. a quick look on wikipedia should confirm it.
I dont think this is the new VXR guys. ive heard through a vauxhall rep that the new VXR is gonna b 2 door coupe with a 1.8l turbo rather than the original 2.0l turbo less exhaust emisions and road tax but more power. This is more likely gonna be the new astra gsi which he said will be a 2.0l turbo 4x4 3dr/5dr model 2 rival the focus st and golf gti and mazda mps.
I take it nobody actually read the article. It's a test mule. VXR running gear with a regular Astra shell. Anybody with a brain could work that out. In fact, you didn't even need to work it out, it's written in the third paragraph for you.
well cant be any worse then the old astra, thats was sooo unreliable and handled like a fish on a wet plate
