Is this Vauxhall's new Astra-based convertible? Spied being moved back under cover at the company's Russelsheim base in Germany, this photograph is the closest we have come to seeing how the new four-seater drop-top is shaping up.
The model was only recently green lit for production by Vauxhall CEO Nick Reilly, but as this picture proves, it seems the company has been working hard behind closed doors for many months.
As you can just about make out from the picture, the new model uses
Astra GTC-style tailights and rather than a hatchback with an upright
tailgate, has a gently sloping roof – which is covered by a sheet. It
is not known whether the car will be a folding hard-top, like the
TwinTop it effectively replaces, or a canvas soft-top.
Whatever the case, it will feature room for four adults and is expected
to be a sporty model, in line with its status as a flagship.
Talking to Auto Express at the Geneva Motor Show, Nick Reilly said: “A number of models were put on hold as a result of the recession – the Astra GTC three-door coupé was delayed, for instance. But we will build a new convertible that will provide a ‘halo’ effect for the range.”
He continued: “It is two years away from launch, and will be a separate model. It will share some Astra components, but it will not be called Astra – in fact, we may use a name from our past. It will sit above the GTC.” Asked about the name, Reilly said: “Calibra
is possible, as well as Manta."
