Latest shots of Porsche’s next 911

Porsche’s cleaner, meaner 911 gets stuck in the snow during cold weather tests in Scandinavia.

Porsche’s next 911 is just eight months away from making its global debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Codenamed the 991, Porsche’s engineers are putting the finishing touches to the next 911’s next generation of PASM in snowy Scandinavia.

Unlucky for this development driver, he misjudged a slow speed right hander, burying this prototype in a snow bank. The driver’s misfortune gave our spy photographer chance to snap away, revealing more of the new car’s secrets.

The 991 model is a little longer and wider than the car is replaces, giving a little extra space in the 911’s snug cabin. The driver has been moved forward a little, and the wheelbase is now 100mm longer, giving more cabin space, particularly in the rear.

New design details include larger, composite front wing pontoons which house all-LED headlights, slightly deeper side sills and door-mounted wing mirrors, and a more significantly sculpted rear end, with design cues borrowed from the 918 Spyder concept.
The new 911 shares its front suspension and steering with the next Boxster, to cut costs. However, the rear suspension, and calibrations for the adjustable dampers remains unique. The car also gets the option of dynamic engine mounts and ceramic brakes for improved agility and reduced weight respectively.

The engine range follows the current car, with the 3.6-litre flat-six Carrera model’s power and torque rising 20bhp and 20Nm respectively, to 365bhp and 400Nm. The 3.8-litre unit in the Carrera S boasts the same gains, taking power to 415bhp and torque to 440Nm.

Despite the power increase, tweaks to the direct injection system and the addition of brake regeneration and stop start reduce fuel consumption by 12 per cent.

A six-speed manual gearbox will be standard, and the seven-speed PDK will be an option. Most buyers are likely to opt for the auto though, as around 80 per cent of current 911’s feature the PDK dual clutch gearbox.

The 991 911 will make its debut at next September’s Frankfurt Motor Show, and goes on sale in the UK the following month. More powerful 911 Turbo, GT3 and GT2 models will follow in 2012.

@jemyd

something completely different would make it not a 911. They've done completely different with the Cayenne and Panamera, why mess with the mga successful 911 formula?

Boring Boring Flat 6 Porsche

Utterly predictable as usual, purchased by engineering obsessed middle aged men with no imagination. For style, flair and passion look no further than a Ferrari.........Daytona excepted!

New 911

Let's face it, you either like 911s or you don't.

911s are for people of taste and discernment, who appreciate fine engineering, constant evolution of an already great product, design that is never out of date, a car that starts when you want it and doesn't go wrong, the best sports car in the world.

For the rest of you, there are Ferraris

Porsche? Taste and Discernment?

Oh yeah thats something you hear about the Germans a lot isnt it!! DONT THINK SO!

For those who are predicatable, a little bland and havent changed their haircut since the 1970's theres the 911, for those who like excitement and variation in life there is Ferarri.

The more things change...

...the more they remain the same. The following headline has been used several times every winter since the birth of the Porsche 356 and of its child the 911: Man Digs Porsche Out Of Ditch.

Buy the Jaguar and stay on the road.

What a great advert "New Porsche Crashed on Test" ha ha.

boring yes but..........

I think there's a very simple message here which is:

if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Ok, yes, it looks much like any 911 that has gone before it aside from some subtle design tweaks and each time upping the power output from the engines, the 3.6 flat 6 being one of the best engines available in the world and always has been. I'm never likely to own even a used 911, much less a Ferrari but Ferraris are much too ostentatious for my liking anyway. they may be beautiful cars, I'm not disputing that fact, but they are for those who want to shout their status from the rooftops which makes them ostentatious as well. A 911 is still a status symbol yes, but it's much more subtle. It would be a 911 over a Ferrari for me any day but there are probably some who would call ME boring, including I suspect most of the respondents here.

Serious question...

Forgetting for a moment whether you like the 911 or not, if this one drove past you on the street, would you give it a second glance?

Porsche obviously think you won't, hence why they haven't bothered to disguise it. It's time to drop the 911 from the range and start afresh...

By sgtgrash on 1 March, 2011, 1:31am

what changes

as its been mentioned above, the 911 remains the same in terms of styling. I dont even know why they bothered disguising it, nobody would have told the difference.

yes its an icon, but yes it also needs to be redesigned from time to time!
