Vauxhall Astra GTC revealed

Vauxhall unveils production-ready GTC which targets Mégane Coupé with stylish look

Astra 3dr revealed at last front

By Paul Bond

26th April 2011

Finally, it’s official... We revealed the best spy shots yet of Vauxhall’s new three-door Astra here – but only now has the company released approved pictures of the sleek, production-ready car.

The roadgoing version retains the dramatic styling of the model seen at last year’s Paris Motor Show, including the deep new front grille, blistered wheelarches and swept-back LED ‘eyebrow’ headlights.

At the back, the sloping roofline tapers neatly into the curved tail-lamps. And although details such as the 21-inch alloys and low rear bumper are axed, it will still be one of the best-looking hatches on the market, and take the fight to Renault’s Mégane Coupé.

Vauxhall is promising the GTC will be the finest-handling car in its class, and will seat five adults in comfort. Full details of the engine line-up and pricing won’t be revealed until UK sales begin on 7 June. Expect to see the same petrol and diesel units as in the five-door, with a 300bhp VXR model due early next year.

The production GTC will make its world debut at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show, ahead of first customer deliveries later in the autumn.

Mazda backend and the front looks like any other car in the market

A bit cruel hugo_b!

As a Scrirocco owner I am looking a bit enviously at this design, if they can improve on the dull handling of the current Astra then they could be onto a winner.

The prospect of a VXR version is very appealing - it would trump the Scirocco R on paper.

Just one thing though, I always think of the Astra brand name as one that should be retired - too many memories of god awful abominations in the 80's and the 90's...

Long Live the Astra

"awful abominations in the 80's and the 90's"

The Astra GT/E was the hot hatch at one time and the GSi was certainly better than the contemporary GTIs and XR3s/RS2000s.

Just my opinion

Handling

"Vauxhall is promising the GTC will be the finest-handling car in its class"

I'll believe that when I see it. Recent hot Vauxhalls have had plenty of power but awful chassis. When the new Focus ST arrives we'll see if that is true

I can see what you mean about the Mazda backend...... but maybe now mazda can see how good a backend can look when its done with conviction and not the half hearted committee designed cars they come up with.

Better looking than the Focus...

I have never had a Vauxhall but it is far better looking than the Focus which has become so bland.

Stylish

Sorry Vauxhall critics,
I've bought Four BMWs and many other brands and this car looks stunning.
If only they had the engineering skills to produce this in a reliable Twintop version, it would be superb.
What a shame Vauxhall are always the Bridesmade, never the Bride.
Now, if only VX could make their Dealerships look as though they came from the 21st Century and not 1965!

Brilliant

This is a fantastic looking car, and long awaited by myself in the new astra shape. A trip to the retro dealer might be in order when its released!
