While the BMW isn’t as stylish as the Audi, it certainly leads the way for driver appeal. Incisive steering, instant responses and very strong brakes are first class. The ride is a bit firm, though, and wind noise is an issue.
The standard electric seats in the 3-Series are very supportive, thanks to the adjustable side bolsters. Dash plastics and materials match the Audi, but the 335d doesn’t have the same feelgood factor as the A5.

A strict two-seater, the BMW’s passenger area is divided in half by the extended centre console. This provides useful additional storage, while the two rear passengers get the most room to play with.
With 282bhp, the 3.0-litre twin-turbo diesel is the most potent in a compact car. The straight-six provides astonishing performance, while returning 35mpg in our tests and emitting only 200g/km of CO2.
