UK’s clean winners

Stop-start mega test (Issue 1,059)

Stop-Start test

Our road test team normally prefers quiet country roads and race circuits to rate new cars. But congested urban streets were the perfect setting for this special test – so we headed to the UK city with the worst jams outside London.

Bristol was the ideal location to put a string of stop-start models through their paces. That’s why we ended up joining the local rush hour in cars ranging from a Citroen C2 and Toyota Auris to a Honda Insight and BMW 3-Series. Smart’s ForTwo came out on top, returning 47mpg – although VW’s Passat BlueMotion put in a sterling effort to produce fuel economy of 46.8mpg.
