Next Swift takes first steps

Spies caught Suzuki on test, and disguise can’t hide curvy front end

07th August 2009

This shadowy supermini is the latest evolution of Suzuki’s top-selling Swift! Our spies caught the prototype on test, and it’s only the first step in the firm’s efforts to create a successor worthy of the original.

Despite the black plastic disguise, it’s clear the car will retain its unique design – the rounded nose, short rear overhang and purposeful stance are all visible.

Our sources tell us there will be a strong range of petrol engines, delivering between 90bhp and 130bhp to the front wheels. A new 80bhp 1.3-litre diesel option will be added to the line-up, and we’ve already heard rumours that a hybrid variant is being developed – it’s set to follow in 2011.

Plus, there will be a successor to the popular Swift Sport hot hatch. The newcomer is scheduled to make its world debut at the Paris Motor Show in autumn 2010. Prices will be announced closer to the car’s launch, although they are likely to increase slightly.
