Weird and wonderful cars of the 2014 Beijing Motor Show

There were some exceedingly strange cars that the 2014 Beijing Motor Show, we pick the most memorable

As well as showcasing some really significant cars, the Beijing Motor Show is a celebration of the weird and wonderful. Here are some of the oddities we found this year.

• Best cars at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show

  • This golden great was on the stand of Youngman – a Chinese brand that markets its models as Engineered by Lotus. Wonder if the Hethel company is proud of this one?

  • Lifan 330

Look familiar? There’s more than a hint of MINI to this. Even the Chinese brand’s press material hails it as fashionable, artistic and with ‘mini’ temperament. <a href="https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/motor-shows/beijing-motor-show/86

  • This BJ180 followed a route pioneered by Jeep with its distinctive grille. Its maker, Beijing Automotive Company, is one of China’s larger car producers.

  • One of the more striking cars at the show. Looking not unlike a melted Nissan Juke, this four-door crossover with a chrome roof will go on sale in China in 2016, with a 1.5-litre petrol engine.

  • Suzuki Grand Vitara

Conspicuous consumption is very popular in China, with chrome and gold much more popular than in the west. This Suzuki Grand Vitara definitely pushed the boundaries of taste but at least it would get you noticed.

  • For sheer presence, few cars came close to matching the simply enormous six-seat JAC SC-9, which claimed to blend elements of cross-country vehicles and racing and luxury cars.

  • Last-gen Range Rover not big enough for you? How about this six-metre-long version, featuring six individual seats. Tuner Dayoushangji from the city of Dalian was responsible for this one.

  • Another Lifan. This compact four-door SUV featured the badge of the Portuguese national football team, and bizarrely, an image of Luis Figo on the bonnet. No, we don’t know why.

  • American influences merge with an old Rolls-Royce bodyshape to produce this ungainly limousine that conjured images of a hearse in its sinister black paintjob.

  • Not dissimilar to the Range Rover Evoque’s slightly less gifted big sister, this concept features gullwing doors and, apparently, autonomous driving. It’s heading for production.

  • No mistaking the Lotus branding here. The Youngman stand unforgivably featured dirty cars, falling off number plates and a general shoddiness not widely evident at Beijing this year.

  • And finally… Yes, the general consensus is that Rodius is ‘not a looker’. But this registration plate really doesn’t help the Korean carrier’s case.
