The cabin has been updated with a new central tablet style infotainment screen.

At 690-litres with the seats up, the bootspace is large enough to swallow five people's luggage.

The rear seats provide ample headroom and legroom.

The new infotainment unit is not as good as the one in the BMW X5 and the system itself isn't as intuative as BMW's iDrive.

The GLE 250d provides 500nm of torque at 1,600 rpm.

Mercedes's 3.0-litre turbodiesel V6 is a better option as it provides 620nm of torque and 254bhp.

As usual with Mercedes there will be a AMG version with upgraded power output and a 0-62mph time of 4.2 seconds.

The GLE will get permanent four-wheel drive across the range.
