Roads in Scotland with speed cameras have seen an incredible 68 per cent fall in deaths and serious injuries, new figures show.

A study by the Scottish Parliament compared the number of crashes in the three years before cameras were installed to the three years after they became active. The number of fatalities on the roads studied fell from 337 to 108, with the number of injuries down from 1,400 to 684.

The statistics – published in a report entitled Key Scottish Safety Camera Programme Statistics 2011 – also showed that speeding and red light offences fell year on year since cameras went live.

In addition, the Scottish Crime and Justice Survey 2010-11 revealed that the vast majority of Scots are in favour of speed cameras, with 82 per cent saying they are a good thing.
