Audi has added an efficient new 1.4-litre Cylinder on Demand engine to the A1 and A3 line-ups. This new engine can shut down two of its four cylinders on light throttle loads to improve fuel consumption.
The 138bhp 1.4-litre TFSI CoD starts from £16,740 in the A1, offering fuel economy of 60.1mpg and CO2 emissions of 109g/km. Impressively, acceleration from 0-62mph takes just 7.9 seconds.
The A1 Sportback boasts the same figures as the three-door, and if you order S line or Black Edition models fuel economy stands at 57.6mpg, while CO2 emissions increase to 113g/km. All A1 CoD models come with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox but a six-speed manual will be made available later this year.
Meanwhile, the A3 CoD variants start from £20,055, which is £850 more than the existing 1.4 TFSI with 120bhp. The CoD A3s all come with a six-speed manual gearbox and claimed fuel economy of 60.1mpg. The three-door A3 can sprint from 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds, while the Sportback manages it in 8.4 seconds.
For comparison, the standard 120bhp 1.4 TFSI in the A3 allows for 0-62mph in 9.3 seconds, and boasts fuel consumption of 54.3mpg with CO2 emissions of 120g/km.
The A1 and A3 1.4 TFSI CoD models are available to order now.

look forward to hearing the actual real-life MPG for this engine...
Quite so.
Audi unveil new engines? It's actually a Volkswagen engine. Oh yeah aren't all Audi's are actually Volkswagen's with a different badge, so snobs can pay more on the same car to feel better about themselves?
In the Polo BlueGT and some golfs too isn't it.
When Ford unveiled their 1.0 Ecoboost engine it was met with rave reviews whereas this engine seems to have largely slipped under the radar. This seems strange to me considering that it offers significantly superior performance with similar/better emissions & mpg figures. Obviously the jury is out until the real world mpg is known but on the face of it this unit looks pretty incredible. Bearing in mind you will get equivalent performance to the best 2.0 diesels this has the potential to be a true game changer if it gets anywhere near their real world economy.
I think the real life MPG will be closer to the claimed than many other small turbo petrol engines because the engine should have adequate power at low revs before the turbo spools up unlike 1.0/1.2 units.
And of course, 2 cylinders will use less fuel than 4 under light loads and cruising at lower speeds.
If the fiat twin air (2 cylinder engine) is anything to go by, 2 cylinders doesn't always use less fuel...
When I had a brand new fabia, the sat nav system was something like £400 more in a polo and £700 more in a golf for the SAME system!
I'm no expert but my point is that of course 2 cylinders are more efficient than 4 when only 2 are needed. In the case of the TwinAir, it's 2 cylinders are used ALL the time whether you're cruising or harshly accelerating.
Surely when accelerating, a bigger displacement takes less strain than a big turbo on a tiny engine.
If anyone is genuinely in the know, please feel free to correct my hypothesis.
Audi = Idiots car. Always the car that's trying to touch his front bumper on your back bumper. They are now worse than Volvo driver's, BMW Driver's and even worse than people who think they are safe in Range Rovers and they ironically always seem to end up upside down. If you have lot's of money and want to advertise to the world you are the kind of idiot who drive's around with the oil pressure light and charge lights on and think it's just a decorate feature... then be my guest. The car just emits you are rich and stupid.
Audi - Terrible motor. Implies that you are an idiot with lots of money. The kind of person with an insecurity of his dingle-dangle, and no understanding of what the charge light and oil pressure light means, and just carry on driving assuming it's just a decorative feature that Audi have unveiled. And I really don't think that Audi driver's care about fuel economy seeing as they seem to love tailgating everyone in an attempt to get their front bumper on everyone else's rear, slamming the brakes and full throttling all the time.....
@ The Two Ronnies below - this seems to be the general comment these days. Sold by white goods sales people to ppl who think Audi is the in trend vehicle. After >25 years of VAG product I switched to the DarK Side and was amazed at the culture within BMW. Audi used to be cars built by engineers for engineers and then the commercialism set in with the launch of the A4 in 1995. After the RS6 V8 biturbo (2003-4) and maybe the last RS4, I can no longer tell an RS model from the Sportline. And the dilution of the RS brand just goes on and on. Audi Marketing are truly achieving the Emporers Clothes myth with their product but soon ppl will start to realise its all just image and held up by the VW Group technology resource and demand for sales
Surely their 'tailgating' is really 'slipstreaming' as they try to eke out that last precious mile from every thimble-full of fuel? And the full throttle is to try and run the engine at higher effective compression ratio, to give better SFC? And the slamming of brakes is early shedding of speed, so that they can reach the end of the queue as it has started moving again, so they don't have to re-accelerate, so saving even more fuel? OK, no, maybe not, then...
Maybe not rich, most likely just on credit with an unaffordable balloon payment at the end of the credit agreement...
60mpg if you drive at 40mph in 6th all day - 30mpg if you drive normally.
When will AE start to take a more professional approach to consumption figures, rather then just repeat the manufacturers lies parrot fashion?
Love the abuse Audi's get but I bet none of the abusers own one... Don't get me wrong I don't but they are superior quality its like the difference between an a4 and an a5.. you wont notice any more space however you will pay 10k more... style is important and no one can deny it... if you can afford it and like it why not....?
Weak argument against Audi.
The engine appears great so far my friend is about to get one in her Golf company car looking forward to having a go and hearing mpg over her 25k plus a year...
Here we go again - lots of jelous comments below from people who can't afford an Aiudi....sad realy.
These aren't "manufacturer lies" - they're official figures based on a fixed testing regime imposed by the EU. Certainly the manufacturers optimise their cars for the tests - they'd be daft not to - but claiming that they're manufacturer figures is incorrect.
Who on earth buys a car on the basis of the sort of people drive them? I don't know about you, but I buy a car for what it is, even if it is based on a VAG platform, Audi's not a rebadged car like the Passat and Superb was!
Model for model an A3 is the same price as a Golf. Not so much snobs buying Audis as idiots buying Golfs. Though probably not as idiotic as some of the nutters who post comments on here!
Audi. Best car I've ever driven and owned. I've had a Merc, BMW, and VW in the past. All the derogatory comments on here about VAG. VW quality is very different yet They seem to omit Bentley, Lamborghini in their comments which also share Audi parts. Pure Jealousy.
If you 're trying to have a discussion with nutters then what does that make you ? :)
These independent tests are completed in by labs in many european countries - BMW have the cheek to send a car with only one seat for the driver for testing, maybe that's why my little diesel BMW got 47MPG rather than the 63+ claim, on the other hand my petrol 1.8 focus on the same journey (cheshire-Pembroke) gets 42MPG
agreed with Ronnie 100% except for the point you made about real money - here in this little bit of Cheshire the aspirant i.e the stuck up, superior with sharp elbows drive Audis (the white 4x4 Audis with tinted windows being the most "obvious"), the real well off still drive Range Rovers even Overfinches
Always Dexterwest trolling on AE against Audis. A bit bitter aren t you? You must be jealous.
Audi have their own engine development unit as do the others within the group. If Bentley or Lamborghini develop an engine as with Audi it's still branded VW with an engine code so it can be modified by different users within the group.
VW Group engines are revered to be one of the best in the world. Nothing you say here can change that as the numbers speak for themselves. Your ignorance is so apparent on this.
At the moment, only Bentley and the upper Audis use cylinder deactivation. This is actually an Audi development originally used on the Bentley Continental.
All German cars share the same/similar parts as they ALL use Bosch and Siemens.
Daily Mail Reader?
Ronnie....You are definitely a Daily Mail reader. Not happy with life in general?
ur a dick just like everybody else
