We list the 10 best city cars on the market, from the VW up! to the Kia Picanto and Fiat Panda

Buyers in the market for a city car have never had it so good. There was a time when a cheap runabout was nothing more than a hunk of metal on four wheels, but that's no longer the case. No matter what's important to you, you'll be able to find a model that caters to your needs – whether you're looking for low running costs, practicality, comfort and refinement, sporty performance or even some premium badge appeal.

City cars also no longer come with the kind of compromises that might have put you off in the past. Plenty of models come with five-star Euro NCAP safety ratings and the kind of hi-tech Active Safety gadgets you would only have found on premium executive models a few years ago, like ESP, for example.

And these models are more practical than ever – with some offering more than enough space for four adults, and almost 1,000 litres of load space with the rear seats folded. And because the market is so competitive, prices are extremely reasonable. You can drive home some of the best models in class and still have change left over from £8,000.

We’ve selected the 10 best city cars currently on the market. Click the links on the left to see which one suits you.
