Navigon MobileNavigator sat-nav software for iPhone

Price: £37.99 (UK special price until 30 September; £59.99 thereafter),£79.99 (Europe) Rating: 4/5

Leave that sat-nav at home if you have an Apple mobile, say the experts at Navigon, who have launched a route-finding application for the iPhone.

To see if they’re right, we used it to plot a route from Chobham in Surrey to central London.

It didn’t get off to the best start, as European maps come in a massive 1.67GB download!

Still, once the MobileNavigator was loaded, it worked really quickly, locating satellites within 10 seconds and holding on to them for the duration of our trip.

We ran into problems when a call came in, though.

Although the unit cut out fast enough for us to answer, while we were talking, the software didn’t reload, leaving us to fend for ourselves.

Even after we hung up, the Navigon sat-nav didn’t display automatically, so we had to stop and reprogramme it.

Still, between phone calls the app worked much better and more quickly than we had expected.

Verdict

 * Problems: Cuts out during calls, pricey, takes up lots of memory.

 * So why buy? Quick to lock satellites, hardly any lag when switching view.
