Mercedes SL63 AMG

Ballistic performance and a thumping soundtrack are standard features in every AMG model, but the Mercedes tuning division needed to raise its game this year. In the past its cars have failed to deliver in this annual test, as it takes more than dragster pace alone to win here.

This time it was a different story. The new SL63 AMG was an epic performer on road and track. We were universal in praise of the big convertible, thanks to a host of significant improvements.

The new seven-speed automated manual gearbox replaces the old self-shifter, with devastating effect. A pair of steering wheel-mounted paddles transforms the SL from a boulevard cruiser into a serious performance car with crisp and fast gearchanges.

On the track, its thunderous V8 delivers astonishing pace as it catapults you out of corners, while it steers and stops like a much smaller car. The track ESP setting is also among the best we’ve tested, allowing controlled slides before stepping in. Add superb on-road refinement and comfort and the latest flagship SL is a gem, despite its £100,000-plus price!
