Audi TT S

Active dampers, a punchy motor and strong brakes propel TT into the top 10 for first time.

The TT has never been short on style, but the launch of the second-generation model added a bigger slice of driver involvement to the coupé’s appeal. The range-topping TT S brings even tighter handling and more power to the mix, giving the Audi its best chance yet of a high ranking here.

As a result, the aggressively styled motor is the first TT ever to finish in the top 10 of our annual performance car assessment. Producing 268bhp, the 2.0-litre turbo engine is punchy and flexible, while the standard six-speed manual gearbox is lovely to use, too. But it’s the poise and precision of the TT S that makes it so enjoyable. Standard-fit Magnetic Ride dampers mean the Audi feels tightly tied down, and yet it’s supple enough to be comfortable and composed.

Sharp and communicative steering, strong brakes and excellent body control see it come into its own on twisty roads. On the track, compared to rivals such as the Porsche Cayman S, it’s a bit subdued. You can’t turn off the stability control, and it lacks that final edge of excitement that sets apart the top five machines here.

Nevertheless, sure-footed, fast and agile, this Audi is a joy to be in – and it is undoubtedly the best driver’s car to ever wear a TT badge.
