Porsche Boxster Spyder

CAN less really mean more? In the case of the Boxster Spyder, the answer is a resounding yes. The stripped-out special edition is the lightest, fastest and most powerful version of the two-seater to roll out of the German marque’s factory.

Designed to deliver undiluted driving thrills, the Porsche has been on a intensive diet in an effort to save weight, while the trademark flat-six engine gets a 10bhp boost, taking it to 316bhp. Other tweaks include lower and stiffer suspension
for even sharper dynamics. On track, the changes make the car simply sensational. The perfectly weighted steering is brimming with feedback and allows you to guide the Porsche with precision, and the beautifully balanced mid-engined
layout means you can make the most of the incredible grip.

The dynamic masterclass doesn’t end there. Changing gear is a joy thanks to the slick six-speed box, while the optional ceramic brakes serve up relentless stopping power – although, at £5,349, the set-up is eye-wateringly expensive and only marginally better than the standard system. The £1,276 sports exhaust gives a spine-tingling howl as you enjoy the characterful engine’s blistering performance.

Sadly, the Spyder is not without its faults. The ill-fitting fabric roof is fiddly to raise and lower, and draughty at motorway pace. The extremely stiff ride and reduced refinement also make the Porsche a tiring on-road companion.

But the biggest stumbling block is the £46,862 price, which pushes the car to nearly £4,000 over the better-equipped and more user-friendly Boxster S. So while the Spyder was arguably the most enjoyable car to drive on track, its onroad behaviour and cost relegate it to sixth place overall.
