  • Jaguar F-Type R AWD vs Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS

It's an all-wheel-drive supercar shoot-out between the Jaguar F-Type R Coupe and Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS. Can the Jag topple our current sports car champ?

  • Jaguar F-Type R AWD - front cornering

    The F-Type R is powered by a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine and produces 542bhp. It costs £91,660.

  • Jaguar F-Type R AWD - rear cornering

Even though it's AWD, the Jag can still be pushed out of shape on the track, while the exhaust note is infectious.

  • Jaguar F-Type R AWD - interior

The luxurious interior features lots of leather, while the high-set dashboard puts the focus on the driver.

Despite the rakish looks, cabin space is decent in the F-type. Optional panoramic sunroof bathes the cabin in light.

  • Jaguar F-Type R AWD - boot

The Coupe addresses the F-Type drop-top's poor boot space issue with a 315-litre capacity that can be expanded slightly to 407 litres if you remove the parcel shelf.

  • Jaguar F-Type R AWD - front static

Jaguar's flagship looks as stunning as ever with crisp lines and gentle curves. 20-inch alloys, gaping grille and sleek headlamps add to the look.

  • Jaguar F-Type R AWD - rear static

Diffuser-like rear bumper and quad exhausts of this R model add to the Jag's visual appeal.

Narrow tail-lights contribute to the car's svelte look.

  • Jaguar F-Type R AWD - front tracking

The F-Type shot from 0-60mph in 3.7 seconds in our tests and will go onto a claimed top speed of 186mph.

  • Jaguar F-Type R AWD vs Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS - boots

Boots are located at opposite ends of these cars. The Jag's traditional layout makes a more practical proposition than Porsche's rear-engine, front-boot layout, but the 911's quirkiness makes it feel special.

  • Sound meter

Both cars make a decent amount of noise, but the F-Type howls when you rev it. In our tests, it hit 115dB on our meter - that's as loud as a rock concert!

  • Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS - front cornering

Porsche is noticeably more wieldy than the Jag and handling is superb. allowing you to press on with confidence.

  • Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS - rear tracking

The 911 doesn't feel quite as eager as the Jag, but that doesn't mean it's not fast. It was only 0.1 seconds slower to 60mph than the F-Type.

  • Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS - interior

Inside, the centre console cocoons the driver.

  • Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS - seats

Bucket seats add to the 911's sporty feel.

  • Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS - wheel

Optional £5,787 ceramic brakes impressed us on test.

  • Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS - front static

There's no doubt the Porsche serves up plenty of kerb appeal thanks to its iconic design. It's especially distinctive in GTS trim.

  • Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS - rear static

The GTS looks every bit as imposing as the F-Type. Its low nose, sleek roofline and black styling details make the 911 really stand out.

  • Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS - spoiler

Narrow tail-lights emphasise the Porsche's curves, while the slatted black grille and black badging are nice touches.

  • Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS - front tracking

If four-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox aren't vital, Porsche also offers a two-wheel-drive manual GTS. The chassis has a nicer balance and you'll save £7,581 if you opt for this rawest GTS model.
