There's plenty of standard kit, which makes it good value for an electric car - but it can’t compete with conventional rivals on price.

Like all electrical cars, the Leaf suffers from a limited range. Nissan claims that it can do 124 miles on a single charge, though - so it coud suit commuters.

The Leaf is very cheap to run as it can be charged up at home - and there's no road tax to pay either.

To recharge its maximum 120 mile range will take eight hours from a normal power outlet. More fast-charge points are appearing around the UK though, and these can give you 80 per cent charge in just 30 minutes.

Thanks to a 108bhp battery-powered motor, the Nissan Leaf will reach 60mph in 11.5 seconds and has a maximum speed of 89mph.

The Leaf's model lineup features the entry-level Visia, a Visia Plus and an Acenta before you get to the range-topping Tekna.

There are two pricing plans: the 'Leaf Flex' plan allows buyers to own the car but lease the battery, and the 'Leaf' plan means you own both.

The fared-in nose, sculpted headlamps and distinctive blue badging help the Leaf stand out from traditional family hatchbacks.

The readouts on the dash can help you drive as economically as possible and can help show you where you are wasting energy.

The Leaf comes with six airbags and stability control as standard, while an audible warning system stops people crossing the road in front of the near-silent Nissan.
