Meet the car that Volkswagen says is the world’s most fuel-efficient five-seater!
The latest Polo BlueMotion claims fuel economy of 83.1mpg and CO2 emissions of 90g/km, but costs a hefty £14,500. Can it justify such a high price? With a 45-litre fuel tank, the Polo can travel over 845 miles on a single fill-up.

That means drivers who cover 9,000 miles a year would need to fill up only 11 times! This is made possible by the new 1.2-litre 74bhp TDI engine, which delivers 179Nm of torque from 2,000rpm.
As with most three-cylinders, it has a distinctive engine note, but power delivery is smooth. VW has also modified the Polo’s standard five-speed manual transmission, lengthening the gear ratios to boost efficiency.
Styling tweaks focus on aerodynamics, with a smoothed- off grille, redesigned bumpers and a large rear spoiler. Plus, there’s a set of lightweight alloys, fitted with low-rolling-resistance tyres. These changes also help to make the eco Polo look the sportiest model in the range.

As the Polo edges closer to the Golf in terms of size and quality, it appeals to buyers more than ever – especially when you consider the running costs of this new BlueMotion variant. Fuel returns of more than 80mpg are fantastic, and should offset the high price. We think it’s the most desirable model in the entire Polo range.
