Passat 'GTI' lined up by VW

Do our eyes deceive us, or is this really a Volkswagen Passat GTI? With a macho face featuring huge air intakes, a deep front spoiler and large mesh-covered grilles, this uprated version of the popular saloon certainly looks the sporting part.

Add the angled indicator lenses and the Passat V-Line has an imposing new style - one that’s not purely for show.

Big 18-inch alloy wheels, available with either a titanium or chrome finish, combined with a revised suspension set-up, are designed to improve handling. The stiffer springs also lower the ride height by 25mm, adding to the visual drama.

The result is a purposeful stance absent from the standard model while, at the back, a touring car-style bumper and twin exhaust pipes distinguish the V-Line. But performance fans will be disappointed to learn there’s no GTI badge.

The smart new look is an official VW bodykit, inspired by the R-GT concept vehicles the manufacturer displayed at last year’s SEMA tuning show in Las Vegas in the US. The brand unveiled three stunning modified models at the event, and while the 500bhp 3.2-litre Passat with twin turbos won’t reach the production line, its styling upgrades are being made available.

However, UK buyers who are keen to get their hands on the V-Line improvements might have to shop abroad, as there’s no word yet on when they will be offered in British showrooms. Owners in Germany and Holland can already buy the stylish additions from franchised dealers.
