Due to the success of the current model, its replacement is expected to take an evolutionary styling approach so it doesn't alienate current fans. However, the brand is also thought to have taken inspiration from the Zaroot concept car, which debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in 2005.

Designers have focused on the cabin as well, after being stung by criticism of the dated outgoing 4x4. Bosses want a big improvement, and according to our sources the new model's interior is inspired by the Qashqai crossover. It will be a strict five-seater, with no plans to offer a third row of occasional chairs.

The French company will provide diesel engines, including its 2.0 and 2.2-litre dCi units. The new X-Trail arrives in Nissan dealers this summer, but the Koleos won't be here until 2008. Prices for the Japanese SUV have yet to be announced, yet only a slight increase over the current car is likely, which will take account of the improved equipment on offer.
