Trouble at top for Focus

A problem with the roof mechanism on Ford's all-new coupé-convertible has left buyers waiting months for delivery

13th May 2007

The blue oval has admitted that the Focus CC's folding hard-top didn't open and close "quickly enough" when the earliest examples started to roll off the production line. And last-minute alterations to speed up the process have pushed the promised delivery dates seriously behind schedule.

Ford's latest cabriolet was officially launched last September. However, customers who paid deposits as far back as January are still waiting, and haven't received their vehicle.

This is because, after early reports came back to the maker that people were frustrated by the roof's slow action, it decided to change the hydraulic pump. As a result, opening or closing the hood now takes 23 seconds, instead of 29. This isn't the car's only teething problem. There was also an issue with the roof seals, which has now been rectified.

Ford now says the first batch of CCs have finally arrived in the UK, and are ready for delivery. "At the moment, only 56 cars are being produced at the factory every day, so a large number of customers will face a delay in delivery of their vehicles. Priority will be given to those who have already paid their deposit," a company spokesman added.
